RN GMD Type 42 Bilge Keels
« on: July 13, 2012, 10:21:08 pm »

Howdy, can anyone tell me at 1:72 scale, how far sticking out from the hull should the bilge keels be on a B2 Type 42?

The ones the original builder fixed in the hull look a little on the shallow side to me but, as I dont have a plan, cant scale 'em up!

I know jecobin plans arent generally accurate below the waterline for things such as bilge keel size. So, Im making them so a little under 15mm will be protruding from the hull.

After making some templates and holding these against the hull, they look good so that's what I'll use.

Without knowing the underwater lines at the turn of bilge on a Type 42....  :o...is it asymmetric?.... could the bilge keel plate be lowered further under the turn & still not hit or obstruct the hull vertical or horizontal planes

The reason I ask this is that a bilge keel plate should not protrude out-by of the hull vertical or horizontal planes .....  >:-o >>:-( <*<

Hi Derek. Sorry, you totally lost me.

As far as Im aware, the bilge keels on Type 42's dont sit on a backing plate. They appear to sit directly on the hull (course I may be wrong)!

HMS Liverpool featured in a recently repeated BBC series on HMS Ark Royal. The two ships were in crystal clear water with the Ark practicing taking Liverpool in tow. The bilge keels on Liverpool were easily seen due to the clear water. Each keel visible on the port side appeared to have rounded front and rear 'ends.' They also protruded quite a way out from the hull which is why Im increasing the size of those on my model and will become HMS Newcastle.

Blimey! They look tiny compared to those I saw on Liverpool! And no stabilisers on show! Another picture does show 2 as she's turning over on the bottom of the hull.
