Shooting Scotsmen!!!
« on: November 17, 2008, 05:14:23 pm »

It seems that in York it is permissable under statute to shoot the above on sight with a bow and arrow :o... except on Sundays! :} Wouldn't suggest trying it though otherwise one or the other ( :police:), or both,  <*< >>:-(might get cross!

It seems that the IOM has the same thing then, because York definitely has O0 Surprised the IOM has though, as the Scots never seemed to do much with boats in bygone days so one wonders how they would have got there!!! ;) Also Middle Ages: Wales on the other hand had coracles, so, these not being quite sea going came well down on the overseas maritime threat list! - also as no kilts used were less affected by gnats/midges in mountainous regions and were slightly less aggressive! :} England, well, pretty good on the shipping front, but this place did have a tendency to be invaded! (apathetic until backs against the wall!) - right up until the present day! :} Ireland: had boats of course, but tended to fight amongst themselves (as also Wales), until they realised England was there and that was the end of that! IOM was ok because nobody noticed it was there for a long while!!! {-)

Anyone entering the Houses of Parliament while wearing a suit of armour is liable to be arrested.
It is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament (I'm not sure what punishment is inflicted on offenders).
Any whale washed up on the shore is the property of the Queen, so she can use its bones for her corset.
In Hereford you can shoot a Welsh person on a Sunday, with a longbow, in the Cathedral Close.
You can shoot a Welsh person with a bow and arrow in Chester, inside the city walls and after midnight.
It is legal for a male to urinate in public, as long it is on the rear wheel of his motor vehicle and his right hand is on the vehicle.
Women are permitted to go topless in Liverpool provided they work as a clerk in a shop selling tropical fish.
A bed may not be hung out of a window.
It is illegal for a lady to eat chocolates on a public conveyance.
It is illegal to be drunk on licenced premises.
Any person found breaking a boiled egg at the sharp end may be sentenced to 24 hours in the stocks.
Any boy under the age of 10 may not see a naked mannequin.
It is illegal to eat mince pies on December 25.
In London it is illegal to hail a taxi while suffering from bubonic plague.
Sticking a postage stamp (showing the head of the queen, which they all do) on an envelope upside down is considered treason.
It is illegal to go within 100 yards of the queen when not wearing hose, socks or stockings.
It is illegal for any commoner's pet to have carnal knowledge of an animal belonging to the monarch.
A pregnant woman may relieve herself anywhere she likes, including (if she requests) in a policeman's helmet.
A hackney carriage (i.e. taxi) driver must (still) carry a bale of hay and a bucket to feed and water his horse

I just Googled the Chester/Welshman thing and found this;

Apparently some old laws exist that were never taken off the statute
books. Most of these are quite silly but a few serious ones apparently
still exist. One example is that "you can shoot a Welsh person with a
bow and arrow inside the city walls and after midnight in Chester."

Assuming this law still stands and you *did* kill a Welshman under
these circumstances, would you walk free? What could/would you be
prosecuted with?

"If the particular Welshman was Kinnock I can't see anyone raising any
particular objection."

Priceless...

As a sometime member of the City of Chester Archery Club, I can confirm that this bye law does exist, but I'm not going to avail myself of it.

(and before I'm accused of being "Welshophobic", my dad's middle name is Lloyd, my step-grandfather was a Jones, and my great-aunt Olive used to own the donkeys on Caernarfon beach.)

Did he ever consider boiling those donkeys in oil and serving them up with fresh leeks I wonder? Or was the leek in a Scottish policeman's helmet?

I'll get me coat then, I don't need to be told....

And a few more.

In the 1400's a law was set forth in England that a man was allowed to beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb. Hence "the rule of thumb".

It is impossible to lick your elbow (How many are now trying).

If a statue in the park of a person on a horse with both legs in the air, the person died in battle. If the horse as one leg in the air the person died of wounds received in battle. If the horse has all four legs on the ground the person died of natural causes.

In Shakespeare's time mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. when you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence `goodnight sleep tight.`.

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4000 years ago that for a month after the wedding the brides father would supply his son-in-law
with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calender was lunar it was called the honey month. Now known as the honeymoon.

In English pubs ale was ordered by pints and quarts, so when folks got rowdy in the old days the barkeeper would shout "Mind your pints and quarts". Now `mind your P`s & Q`s`.

Same with the police in Tel Aviv.
