Power supply
« on: November 19, 2008, 08:57:56 pm »

I have a Type VII about 6Ft long
what type of battery would you suggest for it?
I have always kept the battery in the WTC but I have seen batteries put in
the free flood area and I am looking for new ideas.
I have not decided on the fit out of motors etc so it can be 12v or 6v

thanks
Colin

12v is always better than 6v if you have the space, half the amp draw. NiMH or Lipo are the only ones worth considering unless you want a SLA to double as ballast (still I'd use a NiHM or LiPo pack and lead flashing for ballast to keep the CoG low). If keeping the battery in the wet allows you to keep the CoG low then go for it. Keeping the CoG forward result in a more stable (less maneuverable) boat and moving it rear will do the opposite.

thanks for the reply Mankster,
some questions on your reply............if you don't mind  :embarrassed:

1) how do you keep the batteries in the wet with out shorting out?
2) MiMH or Lipo.......What size of batteries do you use the ones I see
have a small capacity and where do you get them from?

the subs I have had before always had a SLA in the WTC

Hello Gingyer,

All you have to do with a SLA is to seal up the positive terminal, the way I did mine was to solder the wire on,then build a " dam " around the terminal and pour in some resin when it goes off remove the dam and hey presto a sealed pos terminal, the other end of the wire you can fit a waterproof fuse holder available from Maplins etc, and the other end goes into the WTC. job done.

Any other batts and you need to seal them in some kind of tube etc with REMOVABLE ends to allow any gas to escape during charging etc. should they vent off. O0

Hope its of use
regards Sub.

If you have a 6ft u-boat, you should have loads of room under your dive uit and it would be advisable to locate your battery there. The only true way to do this is to fit NiMh cells made up into a stck form and layed lengthwise along the inside of the keel. It is oly necessary to waterproof one (+) terminal at the battery and at the termination to the dive unit to prevent conduction and electrolysis. The pack itself should be also be waterproofed. You should use a 12Volt pack on a boat this size if you are to get any performance or running times from it. The packs need to be made up for you as the cells are all spot welded together and I fit them to all of my kits now with the exception of the Akula.
You will probably need a pack of 4.5Ahr minimum capacity for such a boat and they are also available as a 9Ahr capacity but be aware, they are expensive (if you buy good quality cells) and you still have to waterproof them.
I make and supply these packs ready to go and if you need any further info, feel free to pm me .

Hi all,
was talking to sheerline about my uboat and something came up about the manufacturer.
I was given this uboat so can't answer the question of who the manufacturer is,
I know the sub is 1/35th scale I was lead to believe it was Andreas who made this and
all the decks, conning tower and fittingd are accurate armour can anyone shed some light on this

thanks

Colin, I wonder if this boat was made by a company who used to advertise in Marine Modeller International, His advert used to be headed ...'The best of the U-boats' and I believe he was based in Suffolk. Unfortunately I can't remember the company name but some of the other chaps might be able to shed some light.

Hi Sheerline,

I believe that this was John Bertola, and the company was Superyachts.

This is his website www.superyachts.kwebdesign.co.uk.

I emailed him a couple of months ago re the vavailability of this model, but didn't receive any reply.

Funnily enough Peter, the name came into my mind as I woke up this morning and you have beaten me to it, I believe he no longer makes the kit. I used to have one of his hulls here, leastways thats what I was told it was and it was a superbly well proportioned boat.
