A warning to you all....
« on: November 20, 2008, 06:17:55 pm »

Gentlemen, a warning to you all…

Today I received some news from the DVLA…my full class 1 HGV licence is to be returned to me intact within a few days, so I now entitled to drive virtually anything on the road with wheels again (apart from a milk float... :o…strange that) Mind you, apart from a milkman, who would want to drive a milk float?  O0

This means that I shall very soon be behind the wheel of my sweeper again, (affectionately known as The Mighty Dyson) terrorising the Sussex motorists, holding up the traffic to the best of my capabilities, and generally making the biggest nuisance possible of myself. You have been warned men…  :P

Be afraid…be very afraid.   ;)

You know Rich it used to really annoy me that I wasnt allowed to drive a milk float, weird eh ?

I used to park up in Sandbach regularly Malc, my ex's uncle owned the British Leyland garage.

Found my way, not bad for a southerner.

U33, I thaught a sweeper was an 18tonne rigid, LGV3, with LGV2 being for 6 and 8 wheelers, and LGV1 being anything that bends

I believe nowadays that a class 2 licence covers anything that isn't an artic vehicle, class 1 is a pure artic vehicle. A class 2 also covers you to drive a dog and pup up to 60' in length (I think...) somewhere about there anyway. DickyD...step in here?

I've had my class 1 HGV for nearly forty years now, but I don't drive the big stuff anymore. I used to drive heavy haulage, done the dog and pup bit ('orrible things to drive), and driven big rigids including the 26ton RCV's.
Dyson is a Johnston VT650R, the very first one off the production line at Dorking (the R stands for runway, he's a converted airport runway sweeper, sweeps at 30mph if needs be...and with a 747 coming in behind you, needs definately be!) on an Iveco 16 ton gross weight chassis. He weighs in at 12 tonnes empty, technically I can't carry much more than 4 tons, but he will put a good eight tons on (slightly overloaded....) The technical term for that is : sucks like a French docker's t**t....not that I'd know, of course!

Once seen, never forgotten...he's bright orange and has a plate in the windscreen saying "U-33". Look out for him....and me!

Now on my licence I can drive a milk float (amongst other things) but I've never had a go. Mrs Steamboat has the right hump because she is not entitled to drive a milk float (no Idea why she would want to, unless she's going to moonlight), bit odd the milk float licence thing--any one know why ????

Thank heavens I live in China - now I can sleep at night without any worries!  {:-{

Our street sweepers tend to be more mundane & don't require any special license to operate.

That reminds me of the water bowsers in Shanghai that spray the dust off the streets in summer.

They have an audible warning device, to warn other road users.

The sound units of which I am sure come out of greeting cards. The first time i heard it my branin could not make the connection between the tune and the truck and I was totally confused by what I heard until I realised it was the first few bars of the each of the following tunes in succession:

Silent night
We wish you a merry xmas
Good king Wenslas
Happy birthday to you
and others

Chuck, love the military escort! I've had a police escort once or twice.... :embarrassed:

Dyson is a little bigger than your sweepers over there...pic is of a very similar one to the old boy, only on a different chassis/cab. I'll take a couple of pics of him on Monday...I'm beginning to sound like an anorak now.   O0

TT...I can connect up my Mp3 player to the onboard visual devices (CCTV and external audio) and give all my loyal followers a quick rendition of The Floyd. They love it.... ;)

Nice rig, Rich!  :-))

We actually have modern sweepers (bowsers) in the cities as Tiger alluded to but one still sees the legions of manual sweepers everywhere you look.  That tractor is what I see up a lot up north in Hubei outside of Beijing.

Hi Rich

Have retired now,but when I got my Class 1 it covered me for everything other than a milk float.

A class 2 was anything up to 4 axles but rigid. Still no milk float.

A class 3 was anything up to 2 axles except the milk float, though you could pull a trailer. Daft.

Crazy, isn't it? I can drive things that can carry up 100 tons (I think) on heavy haulage, but I can't drive a milk float. Not that I want to, and apologies to any milkmen we may have on this forum...milk floats are so slow and they hold up all the traffic. (hmm...think 'been there and done that' springs to mind!)  O0

I'm not interested nowadays in heavy haulage, artics or even the good old dog n' pup stuff any more, I get on just fine with my sweeper. Plenty big enough for me now, four or five hours sweeping and an hour to do a tip run...paid for eight hours. Love it...
It will be nice to leave the puddle jumper in the yard and get back to a proper truck...left hand drive, all auto transmission, computerised sweep gear, 200 watt stereo, bouncy seats...oh, the luxury of it!

Yep

That is a powered vehicle.

A milk float is a battery powered vehicle though.

I remember seeing a milk float up at Santa Pod years ago called 'The Pastyoureyes Express", it was powered by a big blown Rover 4.0 litre V8 motor, went like the proverbial gold top off a shovel. A true candidate for the title The Fastest Milk Float in the West!
