No it doesn't, only someone who decides not to look after them properly has this kind of result.

I've been using them for 3 years and not one of mine has ever gone off, and I do have about 15 of them.

Ive seen exactly the same with nicads on a few occasions, when charging they heat up and can get an internal short, you can un plug but they carry on fizzing , they can also expload,

myself and my son have used them for about 3 years and have had no trouble.  mine in my MTB and my son in he's helicopter
not that he's flights are that long.   {-)

we have had no problems, so I wonder why there seems to be this problem is it hard use or bad use.  I have got a lipo sack just in case
looks a worthwile purchase,

further down on this listing is a useful posting.          Lipo battery pack - some do's and don'ts

All cells are safe IF you look after them and don't abuse them, we all use mobile phones and what cells are in them .. in a few years there will be another type of battery for scare stories to talked about,  >:-o   Just think if we where still using 6v motorcycle type batteries that leaked all over the inside of the boat and made holes in your jumpers.  {:-{

The acid in SLAs is dangerous stuff, the electrolyte in the various alkaline technology batteries is dangerous.  If mis-treated, any battery will give you grief in return.  A LiPo, properly treated, is no more dangerous than any other type, but, storing A LOT of energy in a small volume, will be more spectacular when it releases it all at once under failure conditions.
They are extensively used in consumer equipment, but use and charging is in conditions determined by the manufacturer of the equipment.  When we use them, we are the manufacturer, and if we don't know the rules, we can have trouble.
The moral is - buy the proper gear for charging and using them - there isn't a safe, cheap alternative.

Fifth Genteration Li-po's don't do this anymore, unless you REALLY misteat them
