I have been very interested in the comments.
I would not call it "weird" but it did leave me feeling uncomfortable. It seems to me to epitomise the Chinese practise of supressing individualism and demanding total dedication and commitment to some directing mind.
Art is very strange as so many of us view things so very differently. Take opera for example, much of it has ludicrous plots, ridiculous characters and farcical situations and yet it can be quite beautiful. Ballet can be wonderfully gracefull, incredibly athletic and somewhat titillating - all at the same time. To me some architecture seems to go out of the way to achieve a presence when rather more prosaic solutions would be equally beautiful, considerably cheaper and just as effective. Painting and sculpture is capable of being uplifting and threatening; beautiful and shocking all at the same time.
Maybe it is all a tribute to the ingenuity of man and the complexity of our senses.
