Crane barge - Owners Model
« on: November 23, 2008, 06:19:09 am »

I built this model for Manson Construction. The model was commissioned by the
builders, Gunderson Marine, in appreciation for being given the opportunity to
construct the barge for Manson.  The model took ten weeks to build.
I built up the barge and crane while an associate built up the
accomodation house and helipad. The railings really pushed the limit of
my ablity to do brass etching. The crane boom is stick built in styrene.

The barge, E.P. Paup, will be towed to Louisiana and fitted with the deckhouses and crane.
It will then work in the Gulf area building or recovering oil rig equipment.

Thank you, everyone...

The boom drawings gave me two views.
I built up alternate sides by laying the pieces on the plans. and setting all the perpendicular cross bars.
I then worked the cross bracing back in. The color map shows which sides of each area were built first.
Once each area was done, the spacing was for the adjacent sides is set by the previous of following section.
When the sections are joined, again started laying in the perpendicular bars, and followed up with the cross bracing.

Very much like an airplane wing build.

Thank you for the compliments.  :-)

Good evening Umi...will it works..?  means the crane..?  its superb indeed..

This model was built for static display, so nothing operates, and it will never see the water.

The following models, however, were built to create a towing event and used working cranes.
The first event was the Belgian "crane and pin" competition done by the Modelbouwvrienden Hofstade, Belgium.
Many pictures were posted by the Mailline Vaargrouep, Netherlands, in 2009.

CRANE AND PIN EVENT 2009, Modelbouwvrienden Hofstade, Belgium.

The Belgian event required two or more tugs to line up the "windmill foundation" over a steel pin.

For our event  I built a similar crane, however we required the tugs to maneuver the crane
so that the "transformer module" could be placed onto the offshore platform.

Here are a few shots of the working shearleg crane barge model in use, and the offshore spar platform.

It is very simple, and something you can easily duplicate.
The Belgian crane is just a gear motor and winch, used to deploy or take in line to lower or lift the "foundation".

My crane is a gear motor on a double winch, they deploy or take in line to the pulleys.
More loops through more pulleys make the lift slower, but make the winch able to lift larger loads.
This is called a block and tackle.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/army/fm/55-17/ch6.htm

The same principle applys to suspending the crane boom.

Here is a picture of the winch.
