$100 million 287 foot Maltese Falcon Junk Sail yacht!
« on: November 24, 2008, 01:04:52 pm »

Venture capitalist Tom Perkins has a new very high-tech toy to play with.  His $100 million 287 foot Maltese Falcon was unveiled in Italy on Friday.

"But unlike the clipper ships of the past, this one brings nautical technology to new heights. Five years in development, Perkins' vessel has three 187-foot carbon-fiber masts. Each mast has five sails that can form one continuous sail. The sails can be rotated to suit wind direction"....

The mast technology was originally created in the 1960s by German hydraulics engineer Wilhelm Prolls, who used hydraulic motors to keep the mast and sails automatically aligned. Perkins took this technology a step further and worked with a company called Insensys to automate the rigging system and improve aerodynamic performance....

The Maltese Falcon was built in Turkey by Italian superyacht specialist Perini Navi, and will be docked in Malta.

It has been a pet project of Perkins, 74, co-founder of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, who backed Genentech, Tandem Computers and Compaq. Even though it's a pleasure yacht -- with several staterooms and modern art -- Perkins may try to break some sailing records....

Now that is pretty, all it needs is some jibs and spanker on the mizzen mast and she would be perfect to my eyes any way.

I hate to say this, but even with my (extremely) limited experience of sailing, this to me looks very much like a 'fair weather' vessel?

One good southern ocean sized storm and...?

Does that reduce the price?..

Ugly looking thing.
It looks like a powerboat has landed on its deck.

Take the masts and sails away she does look rather sleek :-))

1:48th scale for my ships. Large enough to show gratuitous detail, small enough to stay married.

I would not say no to her, she looks to be a very efficient square rigged sailer. If steam had not arrived when it did who knows the last sail traders may well have ended up being rigged like her, I mean the size crew must be very small, which is what matters to ship owners.
