Nimh v SLA
« on: April 19, 2008, 11:54:22 pm »

Right Im finally getting around to wiring the leccie bits up in Drumbeat. Im currently ('scuse the pun!) going to run her on a 12v, 4300mah SLA.

All things being equal though, which would be better, the SLA (12v, 4300mah) or a 12v 4300mah Nimh? Theoretically, they should both have the same duration but would one say the Nimh, out perform the SLA? Drumbeat isnt a boat that's going to be tearing up and down the lake at excessive speed but she does weigh a bit with the 12v SLA on board!

The equivalent Nimh would only weigh a fraction in comparison so she'd need some ballast to get her to sit right.

Any thoughts?

I reckon that the budget might creep into being relevant here. Component Shop lists the 12v x 4Ah SLA at £10.50 whereas the equivalent 4300mAh Sub-C sized NiMH pack is £33.
Granted that the NiMH pack is far more efficient on a capacity/weight basis and you won't need to recharge it regularly to stop it from dying, but if you're going to need to ballast the model down anyway then you might as well have the lead doing something useful.
Of course you could always ask C/Shop to make you up a D-sized 12v NiMH pack..........cost you about £60 but it's 9Ah and a foot long; awesome!

TWO 4300 NiMH packs??!! Isn't your missus working hard enough already?  ;)

Another fact that may make up your mind is this. If you are going to a weekend show such as Wicksteed and you sail a fair ammount on the Saturday then at least you can recharge the NiMH packs from the car battery so that you can sail again the following day.

Thanks FLJ and all.

The budget isnt a problem and to be fair, somethings are already sorted, ie ACTion distribution board and the SLA already purchased. The ballst issue is a good point hence the choice of the SLA in the first place.

I actually have two others as spares Dave. Cheaper in bulk, I also use the Component Shop.

for fasty boats, I'd use ni-cad types as they seem to give better performance than lead gel types.  found my najade ran better on 9.6 than she did on 12v SLA power

The 12v 3.7Ah NiMH pack is listed as £23.25 will give a longer run time than a 12v 4AH SLA as voltage on a SLA drops below a useable level (say 10v) long before the pack is actually out of juice. A NiHM should supply a minimuum of 12v till its pretty much nearly done.

Yes SLA cant supply hign amps needed for fast electrics .
