Recommendation for tanker or container ship?
« on: November 25, 2008, 02:58:58 pm »

In a month or so I will finish my "Amsterdam." For my next project I am looking for a nice kit of a tanker or container ship. Deans Marine offers the "Liz Terkol." She looks great but I don't like the very narrow beam. Do you guys know of another good looking merchant kit or did built the "Liz Terkol"?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Dan
and thanks for the hint. Yes, the 10 hatch coaster looks nice and got a wide beam. I do have to take this one in consideration.

Models by design also offer a range of hulls if you feel like creating something to your liking.

1:48th scale for my ships. Large enough to show gratuitous detail, small enough to stay married.

If only shipping to Canada would be cheaper.

How big do you want to go, and do you fancy building from hull only?
'Cos I know where there might be moulds for a 9' monster of a tanker that split in two off Spain about 6 years ago.pm me if you are interested.neil. :-))
The ship in question was the bulk oil tanker "Prestige" of 70000 and I built the plug to 1:100 scale.........a whopper :} %)

Hi Neil,
thanks for the offer but I wouldn't know how to move the hull in my hobby room and ........my wife would kill me. I am married for 40 years and learned my lessons. A 4 to 4 1/2 foot model is the max.
Again, thanks for the offer.

Hi,

Have you looked at the caldercraft branneran swedish tanker kit?

old model now but still stands up well against some newer kits

Hi Ghost in the shell,
thanks for the link. Your boat looks great. If I decide to go with the Graupner Sidney Star I would make similar changes like you did.
Great build.
Thanks again.

Wil, i have seen them sailing as intended and they dont sail too bad, just i wanted to reduce wind loading on the hull. added to that, Graupner say use 2x 10ah batteries, I use just 1 and it will sail for longer than the Tx can transmit.

Thanks Paularai, it sure looks nice but it is very expensive. As a matter of fact, I don't want to spend so much money. The "Brannaren" by Calder Craft or the "10 hatch Coaster" by Model Slipway look pretty good too. I also considered the "Gry Maritha" but apparently it is no longer in production. I tried to find one here in Canada but no luck.
Thanks anyway for your hint.
Season's greetings

Your welcome

I have seen very nice container models on www.modellbauwerft.com , again expensive and I have been waiting some time for the kit of the ferry Superfast VII ordered in August!

Hello Awvs,

i have built the Lis Terkol, and came second in the German scale championships with it... i think she sails very well
my build can be seen on the Deansmarine Forum:

http://www.deansmarine.co.uk/forum1/index.php?topic=51.0

mind you, one needs to login to see the Photo's

a report about the kit was also published in a German Magazine, i am not to sure if it would be translated and published in English speaking mags??

Hello Colin-d
and thanks for the information. I logged into the deans marine website and I have to congratulate you on a very, very nice Liz Terkol. No wonder you came in second in the scale championships. Maybe I should have a second look at the model. Decisions,decisions......

Season's greetings

Wilhelm

(btw, I don't have any problems with the German language)

Hi Hopeitfloats,

thanks for thinking about the project. Sorry, the plan for building a nice tanker went down with the economy. I am looking to find something more affordable. In the meantime I am building some electronic gadgets for my current fleet.

Have a great day and a better one tomorrow.
