------------ WaveSpring --------------
« on: December 05, 2008, 11:21:02 am »

Well someone had to make one, so I thought it might as well be me.  ok2

                       I present the WaveSpring

This is a simulated version the Paddleship Waverley that I have been secretly working on in parallel to my construction of the bigger version. I hope you like it. There is a full build Blog on 'Paddleducks' Web site, but here are a few snaps of the construction, so far

She is not ready for the water yet as I have to put in the motor and electronics, but a basic desciption follows.

I have used a standard springer hull and she is driven by a 540 type motor. The paddles rotate, driven by the movement through water. There is a conventional rudder for the steering. I did consider the paddlewheels being driven, but the logistics were too great for the scale of the boat.

Here's the pictures of the build so far..

Thank you Martin. I was trying to finish her before telling anyone, but I couldn't contain myself.

I really do like this scratch building lark. All the constraints of model building are gone and you can let your imagination run riot.

Mind you, if I built the Titanic. it would probably do the  'done thing'    :}

Well I'm getting fed up with being beaten to the post with varients of Springers. Mini Springer/Springalong Barbie Springer etc, so I have a new one on the go. I'm not saying what it is or someone else will get there first.
If I get it done before another appears, I   'WILL'   learn how to post photo's and get some on.

Glad you like them Colin. Thanks for reminding me to make them.   O0

I've decided to bow to pressure and make the paddles do the work. The prop has been removed, as I have found a motor and gearbox from an old printer.

Watch this space as the speed is rather high.  ooh er!!!  Praying I can reduce the speed control or else we shall have foam all over the lake.

Cumon BOB ...get a move on.  Its quite hard to keep secrets, innit.  Sounds like Phil is just behind you. What a great hobby this is.

To think I could have retired to the library.   ok2         The 'Imara' beckons ..............

    ...Well Done Ship Mate...

I have some wee 3 volt motors with a Right angled  worm drive onto a straight through 2 ended shaft...I could send you one & try it to see if it would drive the Paddles as well as the Prop...If you want to try it P.M. me your Addy...

And Dont Forget the Traditional Scottish Music Bellowing out of the Lounges on Board...I can help you with that too also as well...

Once Again...Well Done... Or as they say on the Banks of The Clyde..."Its Pure Dead Brilliant By The Way"

We are currently building 8 Springers at our Club as  Kiddies Have A Go, Hands-On Boats for Open Days etc...I am going to suggest that we finish them as ..."The Ships Of The River Clyde"... So you might just see another wee Waverley type Springer...

...Best Regards...Norry...

We'll have to check the weather first. It doesn't sound promising. There are a few jobs still to be done on her, so I might stay in the warm.   %)

Thanks Norry, I'm glad you like her.

With regards the paddle drive, I have been working on it today. Had to cut it short when I was testing the system and caught my finger. Good job the hull was red !!!

The single motor idea might have to be scrapped as it tended to wobble a bit. Everything has to be mechanically true,  and this is proving to be a problem. I was running the wheels, before fixing down the motor, to find the best position, but there was none that ran smooth.

I like the music idea, but, one thing at a time eh!...  might be ready for 'Yuletide music' time.  ok2

ken

ps
How do you run 3 volt motors on a 6 volt battery at 3 amps or more ?

I only ask because I rigged up some heavy resistors to allow mine to run slow as a test.

                     WaveSprigerley

Here she is with her new name, nearly finished (are they ever?)

We have completed the rigging and the electronics. The paddle wheels are driven by a geared motor to a differential gearbox. If one wheel stalls, the other reverses.!!!

I have made a You Tube film but will put it on tomorrow as it takes a while to download.

Here are the stills following her progress to date.

Cheers

Ken
