doddgy speed controller?
« on: December 08, 2008, 06:44:31 pm »

hi guys,

im using 2.4GHz to controller to control my latest build, the last couple of times i have tryed the electrics the motors will go to full power and off again for different lenghs of time. i dont think this has anything to do with the controller or receiver i belive it must be the speed controller. if it is then thats the second out of 3 Mtroniks speed controllers that have packet up on me  >>:-( both the batterys are fine because ive used them in my tug. Any ideas whats happening???
cheers, dan

Had exactly the same problems with an Mtroniks controller on a fellow members Typhoon. Boat would cut to about half throttle going forwards, full speed reverse, then sometimes it would go back to working okay.

The controllers coming out to be replaced by another make!

I have 6 Mtroniks controllers which I have been using for up to 3 years, and have not had a moment's trouble.

Wonderful lnnit.

You buy these speed controllers, run em for  months, then some bright spark turns round and tells you they are rubbish.

Why not tell you before you've been using them for so long ?

hi richard, im not saying they are rubbish, i was asking if anyone thinks it could be the speed controller causing the problem because thats what it looks like and if this is the case then most 15A speed controllers i buy from mtroniks dont seem to work.

There was a duff batch a few years ago, Mtronic were well aware of it and replaced immediately.
Shame it burnt the deck of my model.
This is why I always recommend a fuse in the supply cable.
Mine had an internal short, and as the model was quite a bit away she stopped and all I could do was hope to get her back.

What size fuse is recommended for a 15A ESC? Also a 25A ESC running 2 motors?

Peter,
It depends on the load of the motors and if the controller is below the stall current of BOTH motors.
But to save the ESC a fuse just below the rating will be fine.
IE, 13 amp in the 15 and 22 ish in the 25.

 Hi,

If its a VIPER controller they are designed  to go 1/2 throttle when they are overloaded so they don't burn out.......  a sort of get you back to the bank failsafe.

When they cool down all will work as normal until its overloaded again that is , check what amps you are pulling with your set up and ensure the speedo is capable for the job its being used for.

All my models 15 + have mtroniks controllers and i have never had any probs with them.

Hope this helps .
regards Sub.
