Finger trouble.
« on: December 28, 2008, 01:22:59 pm »

Hi all, getting old and my finger nails are not as hard as they used to be,

Any way I sometimes get an annoying split and recently I have found that super glue applied to the split works very well holding the nail together as it grows out.

Any medical people out there?  Q. is it safe?  Is there a better way?

regards Roy

Hi Roy,
I have an occasional thumb nail problem. Right thumb right side will suddenly have a split going across to the left about 5mm down the side, with no apparent reason for doing so. I clean degrease and fine sand the nail, and then cover with 5 min epoxy. This holds the nail together while it grows out. I know this is safe, because this is how ladies false nails are done. (Not the stick on type).

Hi all, thanks for your responses, it was one of those things that seemed too good to be true!
Glad there is no problem,
Regards Roy

If it can stick my gaffer's 'bottom' to the lavy set it should do your nails a treat.  :-))

Superglue was designed for medical use.
Used to seal wounds (quicker than stitching) to help control bleeding in Vietnam.

Trouble is longer term, Fibrin (the stuff that forms scabs,) does not grow through the 'plug' of acrylic formed by the glue.

This plug is then rejected by the bodies tissues as healing takes place until it is rejected from the surface of the skin, much like a shard of glass would be.

The disadvantage is that it will tend to leave a scar.

My local GP has used some in emergency to nail together a split hand!
(how do I know? I saw him grab it from my workshop!

For nails though.......no problem!
