Has anyone used Hullform by Blue Peter marine systems
« on: January 01, 2009, 04:55:37 pm »

Hi all,

I have downloaded a freeware program of hullform by blue peter marine systems in australia.

Has anyone actually used this software to build a model boat or yacht?

Thanks

Hi,
Norton scanned it and I have no problems.

Link is

http://www.hullform.com/

I have looked at the instructions and they look a bit easier than CAD, but it aint that easy

Hi,
I haven't used or looked at 'Hullform' before. I use a free program called 'DelftSHIP' for modelling, and is relatively easy to use. easy to manipulate, and gives developed surfaces. As its a surface modeller, i use it to generate the hull shape, and external surfaces to cutout, and then export the model into another solid-modeller program, where i can add thickness and fitting details.
As a tool for modelling the basic hull its very good with multiple methods of data entry, and you don't need a degree in hydrodynamics to use it. I have no connection to the program writers, just use it, and these are my thoughts.
Have just downloaded 'hullform' and will have a play to see if it has any advantages for us modellers.

Hi Ian,
I use both 'Pro-engineer' and 'powershape-e' from Delcam.
'Pro-Engineer' I use at work occasionally, and have the Delcam one at home, and just pay for whenever I output files for cnc.
The 'delftship' is good for drawing the hull shapes and producing frames and developments of the hull plates, and I tidy these up using 'Autocad-Lt' to provide files suitable for printing and laser-cutting.
I have been trying to produce drawings of early (1860 - 1910) NZ iron and wooden scows, tugs, and river boats. A long and slow process, due to local apathy and very difficult to find any material from this period. Currently building a 1/48th river paddle boat from 1864-1868, whose sister ships iron hulk is sadly rotting away on the banks of the river near where I live. A most sad situation.
How easy do you find 'delftship' to use?

I find delftship quite easy now - after practise!

I am using it for a hull design, I intend to do the rest as i go along as its a new design vessel I am working on. The owners and builders wouldnt send a linesplan on confidentiallity grounds, so I am developing my own variation. There will be a build on here, hoping to start in the next couple of months when I finish my current headache/project!
