Just may be of interest guys.I built the first working model of the "Carousel tug" for Novatug the designers back in 2006.I do still posess the full drawings including lines.the real one is in build in the far east at the present time possibly due for launch this year.Although I cannot help with providing copies of plans etc I can help with advice, and say that the G/A as appears in this thread is correct.
Any help required please feel free to ask.By the way toesuppwa that link you have given shows a concept design for the tug built by myself and a colleague back in 2005.I still have that tug.It went to holland and back to ITS 2006.

Kind wishes

Andy.

I would be interested in what you used for the 'ring' on the model?.. and could you tow 'under load' from it?..

I've been trying to figure a way to make the ring....

The hull and superstructure is the easy bit...

Well if you mount the pilot house on a tube, you can place a bearing around the tube, or
a pully wheel, and then buld up on the pully wheel to mount the tow hook.

I can also imagine how one might use cabinet roller latches strategically placed, to
built up a bearing set for for a ring and hub.  ok2

Hi Toesupwa / Umi. I have built my own design of the Carrousel tug a working model with working winch
Built as a tractor tug, It is 28in x11.5in beam, The drives are two shottle drives, but I would like to extend the stern 6in and fit a shottle in the stern. the first photo is when I was on with the build.
Cheers

Hey Poll,
If you go to working boats on this Forum, scroll down to Andy Johannessen,on there you will find a link to "More models from Andy Johannessen",scroll through them and you will find piccies of the concept carrousel boat.the towing ring for this was made from................Curtain track! When I built the Novatug/Worldwise marine design the bearings where made from stell rod in steel tube as per theplan which unfortunately I can't publicly display.

hope this helps

Andy. :-))

Hello, new to this forum, i do go on the model tug forum though, still trying to read through all the stuff on here so i can catch up.
Anyway, back to the subject in hand, how about using the large sprocket from a bicycle wheel, it is ball raced so i think it could work.
Or better yet, a "Lazy susan", these are turn tables type things (See pic)

Hi All.  To fit the towing ring to my carrousel I used a Plastic type bearing from a rotating flashing beacon.
This came compleat with a round plastic shaft through the middle of the bearing.
I cut a hole in the deck to take the bearing,Then screwing the bracket to the underside of the deck.
The next step was to fit the towing ring I screwed this to the bearing, I then made sure the ring ran free, OK. Next step was to fit the walkway it had to be close to the towing ring, so I fitted a small plastic ring to the round shaft that comes out through the bearing, Then fitted the walkway ring this also gave me a base to biuld my superstructure from. Hope this is some help.  see img 6774 Showing upper and lower rings. also img 7585

Hi guys,
Just wondered if anyone knew about the "competition" in carrousel towing? Have a look at Mampaey offshore, click on towing, and then on Diret Oval Towing. I first saw this system at ITS 2006 and had a play with their model Tug which was a 5ft Smit Nederland fitted with this system, and it was very impressive!

Hi All, An update on the stern extension, got the extension done and the drive fitted, I had to Lift the rear deck up to the top of the bulwarks so I could get the motor and drive unit in so looking for idea for back deck. May put some side rails on. This is it so far.

Have you thought about moving the motor through 90 degrees and fitting a flexible drive cable.
Just a thought.

Hi Tugboyben,
