How wrong can you be?
« on: January 08, 2009, 10:53:49 am »

Hi all, I used to be a computer engineer, in the days when they were big and housed in air conditioned rooms., This means I am still recovering from a jaundiced view of computers.  Why?  Well the only ones I ever saw were broken and I was there to fix them!

I do remember saying "Why on earth would I want a computer at home"?

I also remember saying that the Beatles would be another 3 month wonder!

Just how wrong can you be?

Anyone else made similar predictions?

Oh for 20 / 20 hindsight!

regards Roy

After the death of the laser disc and other technlogies.

CDs will never catch on.  They are too expensive. So I now have about 20 years of music collection on cassette tape in the UK slowly getting ferofungus no doubt.

House prices can only go up, and never go down.
My money is as safe as houses in a bank.
Labour said they would not put up incomes taxes, so they'll kepp to that promise.
Tony Blair would not lie to us over as serious an issue as Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.
Gordon Brown would keep Labour's election promise of a referendum on the new EU treaty.
Only 13,000 immigrants from the new EU member states will come to live in Britain.

Get into computers martin, they are the future. So I did.
Unfortunately, computers have become a consumer object....
When they break down, just like TV's, people think about buying a new fast, better one as it cheaper!

Simon Cowell was never gonna be a pop supremo - on account of his lack of musical know-how.
Gordon Bennet-Brown would never run any government - on account of him being of unelectable character.
Single mothers would never be seen driving huge 4 x 4s.
Old folk would always feel safe in their homes/on the streets.
And multiple identities would never rear their ugly head on any UK model boating forum.

Of course, all them things WERE predicted.
But...................

I read somewhere " when everyone uses computers we will become a paperless society" we now use twice as much paper because no one trusts the computer to store the information safely

And most of the paper we use these days will self destruct in a few years due to the high acid content. Looks like it's back to baked clay tablets.

They are just trying to scare Saddam Hussein. They are not going to actually invade Iraq.

Can't go wrong investing in Premium Bonds....until Messrs Darling and Brown decide us punters are winning too much.
Apropo of nothing really, has it never really occurred to these political giants that "savers" outnumber "spenders" by a factor of 7 plus? And guess who gets clobbered. Why oh why do we ever elect such moronic idiots.

You're right, Brian. What really annoys me is when the media trumpet these interest cuts as "good news for home owners" when the people they mean are the 15% of the population who are still paying for them - the building society might "own" them, but they certainly don't. The rest of us, who rent our houses or who have paid off the mortgage and actually do own our homes feel the pinch every time, especially if, like me and, I guess, you, we are on a fixed income of pensions and interest from savings.
