Motors for HMVS Cerberus
« on: January 13, 2009, 04:19:00 pm »

Hi Guys,

I'm looking for two motors for my 1:48 HMVS Cerberus. This is (or will be) a big, slow-moving beast, 1.5m long by 28cm beam, and as streamlined as a Thames lighter! The twin props are built-up 1860s style, with four big flat blades and about 75mm diameter. I have not yet set a pitch to the blades.

My initial thoughts are to use two SHG 950D geared motors at 12V. But I'd like advice on the final shaft speed, which can be 85rpm, 252rpm, 1145rpm or 2100rpm.

Any ideas or suggestions?

At 1:48, assuming a shaft rpm of about 150 for the real thing (pure guess) 1145 should be about right, but prop pitch could make a huge difference for better or worse.

NoMustangMark sells some motors that would be correct for the shafts.

Rick:

Sorry I can't provide motor advice, but I can offer a cheer for your choice of subject.

Monitors were interesting beasts, they make fascinating subjects for models (I've been toying with the idea of building one for several years), and Cerberus is particularly well-documented.

If you have the opportunity, please keep us posted (with pictures!) as you progress with your build. I'm sure that you'll have a large, appreciative audience.

Good luck with your project.

Cheers,

Thanks for the advice - all I have to do now is build the props!

Well, we're getting there. The as-yet still rough stern of my model.
