What is Modified Acrylic Adhesive?
« on: January 14, 2009, 09:11:09 am »

It is a two part A B adhesive.

But is it the same as Epoxy Resin, or can it be used as a substitute?

There is very little on the internet.

This is the most useful I can find.
【Components】
◆ Geliahao Modified acrylic adhesive (HL-302) is two-component (A and B), reaction type structural adhesive synthesized by advanced technology. Its main ingredient is methyl acrylate and other ingredients are toughening agent, tonic, stabilizer, initiator, antipolymering agent, etc.

【Applications】
◆ It is a structural adhesive. Be used mainly for rigid bond, also used for bonding of many materials themselves or each other such as steel, iron, aluminum, aluminum alloy, titanium, stainless steel, ABS, PVC, nylon, polycarbonate, plexiglas (polymethyl methacyrlate), toughened glass, polyester resin, polyurethane, cement, china, wood, laminated board, etc.
◆ When binding glass articles, initial strength is higher. But sometimes glass articles may come unglue automatically because of bigger expansion coefficient.
◆ Not be suitable for binding galvanized iron, red copper, brass, zinc, celluloid, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyolefin, polyorganosiloxane, etc.
◆ Binding effect for flexibility materials is not very good.
◆ Main applications are as followings: automobile, motorcycle, machine, chemical pipes, storage tank, woodworking furniture, lamps and lanterns name plate, daily life, scientific research, etc.

【Performance】

◆ Solidifing fast at room temperature. Set in 5~10 minutes. The wanted strength is obtained after 30 minutes. The highest strength can be achieved after 24 hours.
◆ May be used conveniently. Not need to measure accurately. If two components are painted separately, time of application may be prolonged.
◆ High strength of shear, shock and peel. Good comprehensive performance. Room temperature tensile shear strength (steel \ steel )is >20Mpa, shock strength is >20KJ/m2
◆ Bonding on oil surface. Strength does not decrease apparently when only sanding but not degreasing.
◆ Good acid, alkali, and water resistance. Better oil resistance.
◆ Good heat, aging resistance and durability.
◆ May be removed easily.
◆ Widespread applications.
◆ High and lower temperature resistance. May be used below -60℃ after full solidified for 24 hours.
◆ Have good of electric property, dielectric strength: 15kV/mm2, dielectric constant: 3.0, heat-resistance grade: B.
◆ Have good performance of aging resistance, form 1 gives aging level of various materials in various medium at 15℃-27℃ for two months.
◆ Durability
Durability relates to used conditions and environment, the following experiments show:
○ In Fushun district, strength keeping rate is >50% without loading (Al/Al) outside for four years.
○ Strength keeping rate is >90% without loading (Al/Al) after sinking in water for six months at room temperature.
○ Room temperature strength keeping rate is >95%by measuring one week after sinking in boiling water without loading (Al/Al)

【Specification】

Type Specification Gross weight(Kg) Net weight(Kg) Figuration size(mm)
302 20g×100box 4.03 2.0 290×280×215
302 80g×48box 6.4 3.84 435×260×250
302 10g×100box 2.88 1.0 298×295×183
3000 20g×72box 3.5 2.0 370×227×240

【Operation instructions】

◆ Handling the wanted surface:
○ Sanding
Sanding is used for removing unsteady attachment from the wanted surface to increase roughness of the wanted surface and bonded areas, strengthen setting between adhesive and bonded surface to increase adhesive strength.
○ Degreasing
If the stress of bonded areas is bigger, degrease with solvents such as acetone, chloroform, etc. to increase adhesive strength appropriately.
◆ Bonding
○ Routine bond:
Clean bonded area. After mixing A and B 1:1 with adhesive smear, apply to the wanted surface with in 3 minutes at room temperature. Bond by the aid of fingers. Set in 3~5 minutes. The wanted strength reaches after 30 minutes. The highest strength reaches after 24 hours.
○ Jointing:
If the bond area is too small to bear, may make up bond. Make up corresponding materials on the surface besides adhesive stitch to increase bond area.
○ Twine bond:
After butt bonding, bond by painting cotton, fiber cloth, and thin iron sheet. The method is suitable for the curved stress part.
○ Plugging up a hole:
◇ Instant repair of oil box seepage
Sanding with abrasive paper. Clean seepage part with soap to plug a hole temporarily. After painting, prevent adhesive liquid from going away. If temperature is too low, solidified fast by heating.
◇ Body crack repair:
Dig into the end of crack to stop extending. Handle the wanted surface. Paint and bond glass cloth, do like this three times. It is good that glass cloth is from small to big according to from inside to outside. Notes: paint after the last layer of adhesive solidified, and thickness of every layer of adhesive is less than 1 mm.
◇ Make up a hole:
Drill with aiguilles with slightly big diameter, then cut a iron rod with longness more than hole deep and diameter less than hole (clearance 0.5~1 mm). After handling its surface, bond iron rod into hole (add fill materials such as iron red, iron powder, and aluminum powder to decrease shrinkage and increase sealing.
◆ If bonding is not very good, must bond again. Methods used for removing solidified adhesive are as following:
○ Let solidified adhesive come unglue by beating if strength bonded body is good.
○ If heat-resistance of bonded body is good, may heat at more than 120℃ and slightly reinforce.
○ If solvent-resistance of bonded body is good, may sink with solvents such as acetone, benzene and derivatives, chlorohydrocarbon, etc. to dissolve.

【Notes】

◆ Geliahao Modified acrylic adhesive is solidified fast after mixing, not mix too much every time. If adhesive liquid looks like curing and wiredrawing, suggest not using it to avoid influencing adhesive strength.
◆ Poison is low. Adhesive liquid is irritant. It is nonpoisonous after curing. About 0.1 % user, s skin can have a little irritability, become red and slightly itch when touching it for long time. Use protective gloves. When contacting physician, rub it with acetone and flush with water. If curing on the skin, it comes unglue itself.
◆ Give much heat when curing. May not paint too thick layer every time, or give air hole in adhesive layer to influencing adhesive strength. It could be burning when using too much because adhesive liquid gives violently heat.
◆ Temperature influences largely on solidifing. It should be heated (by incandescent lamp, warm, infrared ray) when used outside in winter, but temperature is not more than 100℃.
◆ Used in the place of good airiness. Not to be taken orally, keep out of the reach of children. Caps of adhesive tube cannot be exchanged to avoid going bad and losing efficacy.
◆ Rise in temperature causes polymerization and lose efficacy. Stores for one year at room temperature(23±2℃). Low temperature longers storage time. Store in cool, dark place in southern high temperature area.

【Performance data】
Part A is pink, part B is pale blue. Both are semitransparent, uniform ropy liquid containing no impurity and insolubles. Revolving viscometer is 3~4PaoS. Density of A and B is 0.95~1.05g/cm3.

Time of cure (23±2)℃,min ≤10
Density (23±2)℃,g/cm3 1.000±0.050
Tensile shear strength MPa a)Steel/Steel ≥20.0
b)Al/Al ≥15.0
Shear shock strength, KJ/m2 Steel/Steel ≥2.0

Acrylics are 2-part resins known for toughness and ability to bond to different and (sometimes) dirty substrates

The best known in boating circles is Stabilit Express which (I hear) is the bees patellae for bonding wood to polyester, wood to styrene, etc

I have been trying to bond to PET (lemonade bottle) for a year or so and running a thread on a yachting site.
http://www.rcsailing.net/forum1/showthread.php?t=4560
Stabilit and other acrylics seemed to offer hope for a while but fell by the wayside eventually as the bonds peeled off

...the bonds peeled off

Hi Andrew
Do you mean the glue pealed off, or the glue peeled the substate away?

Could this stuff be used like epoxy on a wooden hull?
Not for high glass finish, but for giving strength.

Hi TT,

In this case the adhesive peeled away from the PET - it had probably never really bonded
FWIW -  PET is one of the right challenges to glue, together with Delrin.  (as we all know the polythenes, polypropylenes, silicones  and PTFE family effectively cannot be glued or painted without radical surface treatment)

Can it be used as a matrix for fibre re-inforcement, like epoxy or polyester resin?  Don't know.
I have never heard of it being used that way - not that that proves 'owt
I moulded a footy hull using glassfibre and acrylic varnish (one-part water catalysed)  lovely moulding, completely floppy and unusable even with a matrix of CF strands

I would think - having re-read your question-  the real answer is no

Do I take it that it is available in China and you are thinking creatively?

Correct.  :-))
Saw MAA today for the first time. Never heard of it before, and got to thinking of uses and abuses. O0

TT  - worth  a try?  at least on a bit of scrap wood.
Please take care in the mixing, applying - some of the polymerisation reactions can be strongly exothermic, and I have seen balsa charred by over-catalysed resin.

I spent a couple of years in HK - same issue.  Some things, motors etc are extremely cheap but unidentified, and others unheard of.
I learned to liberate blue foam building material for boatbuilding (and planes)
