Rotating turrets

If you had a model warship in say 1:144 scale which had 2 turrets fore and 2 turrets aft how do you motorize them so they can rotate? Would you use a servo contected to a system of rods or motors of some kind?

Pointy,

I assume you would have all guns turning together?

I haven't had occasion to try this as yet but have given it some thought. My 6 channel set has a 90 degree proportional switch which I would use to activate a servo probably connected direct to one turret. Each turret would be connected to the next turret, ie 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, by a pulley and belt. Thus when the control turret turned, the others would turn the same amount. To ensure that the turret all turned to the same side you would need to ensure that the belt connecting 2 to 3 was a figure of eight configuration.

By use of a cam it should be possible  to get the guns to elevate as they turned.

As I said I haven't tried it so I'm not sure if one servo could handle the load but I think the theory is good.

HTH

Cheers

Might be a bit difficult in practice as any slippage of the belt would result in the turrets becoming misaligned. Another possible option would be to link each pair of turrets with rods and drive each pair with a micro servo. The two servos would be connected to one channel using a Y lead and arranged so that each pair of turrets turns the correct way.

There are pros and cons with belts and rods. Maybe a trial setup on the bench?

There must be someone out there who has done it - what did you do?
