Happy Australia Day
« on: January 26, 2009, 09:31:57 am »

Bigfella and Peter Fitness have reminded us that they are celebrating Australia Day today, the 221st anniversary of the arrival of the first fleet in Botany Bay, and the establishment of Australia as a British colony.

Happy Birthday Australia  :-)) {-)

Thanks TT. We had Lamb chops for dinner, as we were told to {-) {-) {-) as it is Australian. The funny thing is that 5 minutes after the Australian of the year received his award he called for Australia day to be on a differant day. He stated that the Aboriginal comunity think of it as Invasion day. He being an Indigenous activist it seams that in accepting the award is a bit hypocritical. You cant please everyone. But all things aside it is a great day for Australia. It seams that there is a serge of enthusiasm in waving the flag which is a far cry of what we used to think of ourselves. Our success in the world economically and in sport is quite phenomenal for a country with only 23million people.

Regards David

It is indeed a great day for Australia David, but there are some to whom it is just another excuse to get drunk. There was a near riot involving an estimated 500 young people here, in little old Lennox Head. I saw the tail end of the fracas, and most of those involved were aged from 13 up to early 20s, draped in Aussie flags, drunk as skunks, and abusing police and anyone else nearby. They are a disgrace to the country and, hopefully, will live long enough to realise just what idiots they were.  >>:-(  In the case of the younger participants, I have to ask, where were the parents?  :o .

Fortunately, the vast majority of people celebrated the day in its true spirit, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Incidentally, I admired the (many) police called to the scene for their restraint, in the face of much taunting and downright abuse by the idiots. Needless to say, it made the front page of the local paper this morning.

I second your comments Peter....strange thing though...many of the :police: officers attending were not much older [in years] than some of the YOBBO's ....Derek

You beat me to it, Mark, I was just about to make the same comment. They did look young, though, but they did a good job. One person was quoted in today's paper as saying that the police were a bit heavy handed  :police: . My response to that would be, well, there wasn't any blood to be seen, so they definitely were NOT heavy handed enough.  <*<  {-)

Sorry, Neil, I promise I won't mention any of those things again.

Well, I must go now, the sun is shining and the waves look great.  {-)

Roy, the idiots didn't spoil our day, we had a wonderful time. The reported 500 turned out to be nearer 100, a shame to spoil a good story though.

Is it a dry 34' or is it humid there?

It is dry where I am. Range of Tems from -10 to +40, but mostly dry, thank goodness.

Too cold for barbies but the fireworks continue unabated, believe it or not. This is 4th day now..

It depends on where you live. Up here, it's quite humid, although the temps are not as high as in Melbourne and Adelaide. We have had some rain which has cooled the temp somewhat, but increased the humidity.

See its a little warm in Aussie right now, 43 to 47 C in Adelaide and Melbourne.
Very manageable 24C here. No Barbies for a while. Was in Adelaide Ash Wednesday, so don't want a repeat this year folks.
cheers
