CHARYBDIS in DETAIL Seawolf/Exocet
« on: October 22, 2010, 01:46:25 pm »

During July 1990 whilst in the Merchant Navy I got the chance of a Liason Trip on the Leander Class frigate Charybdis. Couldnt pass that up so off I went to Gib & after a couple of days staying at HMS Rook, on to join Cherry B. It had always been a plan to make a Leander one day & I set about photographing most open areas of the ship. Here are some of those photos.

Graham, how far back do your naval photographs go, as far as the 60s????

I was 60's RN myself but sadly in those days taking photo's was not a priority, that came much later. Having said that I do have normal side views of many thousands of Merchant ships & some Warships. Submarine photos total about 5'000.

Graham, Same here I took some photos but not many and a lot got lost during a divorce. Do  you have any of the converted Battle
class destroyers particularly Aisne as I am 3/4 through a build at the moment but always looking for more details. Aisne is the one I was on
and when checking the photos I found that each conversion  was slightly different.

Not a lot pugwash, I take it you have the Patrick Boniface book on the Battle Class Destroyers. Also the Model Boats article of June 1991 which covers Alex McFaydens later HMS Barrosa. Here is a picture of Agincourt

yes I have his book and the far better (photo wise) book by Peter Hodges plus every Maritime books publication which has
her photograph - but there are still parts of the ship where details are a bit sketchy. Thanks anyway

And I think of this one - one the 'Toothless Terrors'.

Hi Guys I dont know if you are aware that if you Google Charybdis day Guernsey it will give you a lot of info about the fate of her in 1943. After she was sunk, A lot of dead sailors were washed up in Jersey and Guernsey. Being occupied by the germans at the time,
they all recieved a full military funeral. The graves here in Jersey are in a very splendid park and are immaculately maintained. I nearly forgot to mention the Limbourne which was sunk with her.
