Start with the 385; the 400 Race will almost certainly be too fast, even on 6 cells. If you do decide to go mad later on then the 400 will fit the same mount and coupling.

Thanks Dave...I sorta figured that may be the one to go for. Speed makes no difference to a Motorflote, if you attempt to go fast they just start to wallow. Not a pretty sight...

RA...correct, not good for anybody. On a good day I can do most of the things that I used to be able to do...on a bad day I have trouble rolling a smoke.

Don't think a 380/385 motor will have enough torque to pull a 35mm prop efficiently direct drive.

It's been the normal drive on Revell Snowberrys for ever, and works well.  Usually the motor is on about half its rated max voltage.  Having said that, the original Springers (and this was originally going to be based on a springer hull)were normally powered by a 540.

The Motorflote is completely flat fronted, at least the Springer does have a more rounded bow. A Springer does try and get up on the plane, a Motorflote will just start to porpoise if power is increased, the porpoising will just get worse the faster you try and go with it.

I don't think there's room to get a bigger motor in, I'll know for sure when the kit arrives later this week...if there is a chance of squeezing one of Mr Action's 550's in, then I will, but looking at the drawings it will be tight. The only other choice is to go brushless, I do have a brushless motor that Andy recommended, c/w the matching esc and a lipo, so I'll check that out when the kit arrives.

The 700kv brushless motor will work very well. Won't even work up a sweat on 2s and you can easily go to 3s if you want a bit more grunt.

Another difference between a Springer and the Motorflote is the size..a Springer is 18'' long, a Motorflote is barely 12'' long, but with the aquadynamics of a pair of house bricks taped together.

That brushless set up is gaining in points over a conventional brushed set up, methinks...

Just had the good news from the lovely Debbie at Models By Design...the Motorflote kit is all cut out and in the post.

The crew signed on yesterday...he's known as George. Handsome devil...bears a distinct resemblance to a certain tv Doctor, I'm told.

There was an original George, he's now the official team mascot for She Devil Racing...he has his own personal chair in the trailer, and is responsible for keeping law and order among the crew.

This  is George number...eleven, I think. It's a long story, Frank...

Are you using square section abs on each internal angle of the
hull boxes Rich?

Fingers and hands fully operational today for a change, so I've made a start today on assembling the kit...so far, so good. Everything fits where it should, and it's going together well.

Using a rotary workstand to work on is a great help, it allows me to work on one, then the other, just by swivelling the stand around...brilliant idea, thanks to my mate Ian (IanPAL on here) for loaning it to me.

Time to tidy the bedroom up now, the ladyfriend is coming round later, so Motorflote construction is temporarily halted...

Oh, meant to add...in the photos above, the motor ISN'T a Race 400, it's an ACTion 385, I 'borrowed' the torque ring from the 400.

Fitted the bow panel this morning...and yes, I know there's a slight discrepancy in the height of the left hand upright strengthening strip. Luckily, it won't show and it won't affect anything.

A suggestion you can pass on with this kit. If it's going to be CNC routed, then it would be easy to include tabs and indents so that the parts clip together and self jig. That would simplify construction considerably.

Err? not sure what's going on here guys ??
I am following this thread with great interest - having built the original wooden Motorflote many years ago.

Looking at Andy's (Models by Design) Motorflote mock up at the Ellesmere Port Show today -
the kit includes the necessary bulkheads and sub frames required for easy assembly, all beautifully CNC routed.

I am guessing Richard, because of his dexterity problem, is building the model by his own belt and braces methods
employing box section plastic in place of the kits parts.

The MBD kit should make an easy build 'straight out of the box' as supplied.  Paul
