Correct Paul,

The original Motorflote plan was designed as an easy to build model, so when Andy cut the kit out for me in styrene, it followed the original design, just a few little tweaks here and there. Built from the parts supplied (and as Andy is building the demo one at Ellesmere Port) it will be a piece of the proverbial cake to assemble, but I chose to do my own thing with mine.
I'm finding it easier to put it together with square section styrene, it gives me more contact surface to glue, and more to hold, which is vitally important to me....I find holding things steady for any length of time very difficult.

Another plus factor is that with all strengthening I'm adding, the boat should be able to survive the day to day knocks and bangs it will inevitably receive on sailing days without incurring too much damage. I also have a Thames Lighter to build which I'd like to be able to push with the Motorflote, so the additional strength will be very useful for that.

I should add at this point that before Andy went ahead with this project, he approached David Metcalf (the original Motorflote designer) for permission to produce it as a kit...this was duly given, so I guess a big 'Thank You' is due to David.

I'll post some more pics of my M'flote build in a bit, but for now there's good news:

Andy & Debbie have decided to manufacture the Motorflote as a completely cnc cut kit. You'll get four large sheets of cnc cut sytrene, cut to the original David Metcalf plan, but with a few minor additions here and there to provide extra strengthening to the joints.

it's very easy to put together, Andy assembled a kit at the Ellesmore Show in his spare time...I expect a lot of you saw it being put together.

Anyway, if you fancy building something totally different, contact Andy or Debbie at: sales@modelsbydesign.co.uk or call them on 01425 476 174

Oh...the price? £30 plus postage/packing.

Sounds like a good idea Rich especially if you are using it with anger !
I am going to try and post some photos of Andy's build showing the pre cut structure -
this will be a first for me - but here goes. Paul

It could be famous...or it could be infamous, depends on how you look at it. I just happen to like it...

Chaps, a question or two:

(a) I'm making a false floor for George to stand on when he's on Motorflote driving duty...what material would be used for the floor covering? Any ideas? I'm guessing at either chequer plate or possibly something like linoleum?

(b) The cabin windows...would they be fitted from the inside, or from the outside?

Thanks fellas...

They were very much a utility craft so chequered plate was probably used.
I have seen old workboats and fishing boats with steel decks just having
a nonslip surface done with weld runs done in a chequerplate pattern.
We're the originals steel or Alloy?
On my ply one I put a piece of clear plastic inside and that was it.
You could cut a frame of plasticard for each or just paint a silver outline
around.

Cheers Ned...

I've got some chequer plate somewhere, I'll dig that out later on.

I think for the windows I'll make some plasticard frames, and install them like a full sized window.
I plan to use cd cases for the glass, with one window down and one partly open.

Thanks mate,

I don't do much in the way of competitions, Ned...I just want it to look about right in our local regattas. These things fascinate me for some reason...I don't know why, they are about the ugliest things I've ever seen on water, but there's just something about them.

It's gonna look just great on the water Rich :-))
With a barge or lighter to push they are very pretty.
Or ugly depending on your point of view.
Still waiting for a scan of the plans.

I've never heard of a Motorflote being called 'pretty'..unless it was 'pretty ugly'. But I love 'em..

I have a Thames Lighter for it to play with, that'll be a bit of fun.

I thought I send you a scanned plan? Perhaps I didn't...remind me in the morning, and I'll resend it to you. Everything M'flote is on my other laptop.

Here we go then, boys...latest updates on the Motorflote build.

The radio installation is virtually finished now...just a few loose ends to tie up and that's done. The motor is now installed, and I've started on George's new office...he insisted on doing the interior design himself.

I did try to persuade George to grow a few tomatoes in his new office, but he wouldn't have any of that.

Latest update:

Nearly finished the wiring, just waiting on the battery packs to arrive.
Waiting on the paint to arrive, so I can't paint anything.
Waiting on a few more bits to arrive from Macs Mouldings, so I can't finish the cabin.

Looks like it's time for a beer... 8)

AHHHH yes the TV, the biggest bug bare I contend with, watching MASH and how do they do that, getting inspiration to do............................absolutely nothing  {-).

After a long days worrying on how to pay bill's etc (I now have to do the company accounts as well as deliver goods / parts / draw and progress contracts - were a two man operation), I get home and put my vegetation hat on and watch the gogglebox, when there's nothing on and I have an idea of how to proceed on the multitude of projects in the loft etc then modelling will come to the fore.

are you sure there is enough room for tomatoes - a grow bag on the outside canopy of the engine room might produce some potatoes, but surely there is no room to swing a cat in the cabin let alone tomatoes - water cress maybe.  %)
