Now the MotorFlote is about finished, it's been decided that it really needs something to push around the lake.

One of Chris Peppitt's (Omega Model Boats) superbly moulded Thames lighter hulls will fit the bill perfectly.

1mm styrene deck, false load area loaded up with timber (a stack of coffee stirrers) and bottles of water as ballast...the shipyard is busy again.

Chaps, a spot of advice if you please...

Would there be anything attached to the top of the pusher knees...something like half a bollard on each one, or a connecting rod of some sort? Something to loop the rope around, keep it ready for use, and to stop George tripping over it and falling base over apex into the H20....

I've added a bit more detailing to the 'Flote this morning...George now has a set of welding gear to play with (gawd help us all....), and a nice shiny new boathook as well.

A question was raised in the house last night...

When the lighter is built, and the Motorflote is hooked up and pushing it, what happens if an accident occurs, and through some reason the lighter floods and sinks...the weight of it full of water is likely to drag the 'Flote down with it. So, any ideas as to how to avoid a potential disaster?

You fill all open space within the lighter with polystyrene foam, (solid, beads or beans would work) hence non-sink.

I'd thought about doing that, VNK...maybe blue foam carved to shape and bonded into the bow/stern areas would do the job.

should do. The more foam and less voids, (ie water in) that you can get in, the more bouyant it will be.
Easy to test, in the official indoor test tank.
You don't really want anywhere that water can fill into, (apart from the false hold).
cheers

Well, thank you kindly, Steve...kind of you to say so.

It's been a fun build from start to finish, there was a few swear words along the way, but the craic on here more than made up for them.

I haven't used it in anger yet, I keep finding little things to do on it, but next week my new car should arrive, so I can get out there and complete the maiden voyage. I'll take plenty of video footage along the way, so fear not. As they say in all the best places...''watch this space''.

Fear not, there's so much weight in the side tunnels, it'll never fall over in a month of Sundays. Battery packs each side, two lead blocks in each tunnel, and two lengths of steel bar either side of the motor, right on the bottom of the floor.
