Bullies...you're all bullies. George managed to move the side of the temporary pool we had up, without even trying...

Anyway, I'm telling the chairman of you lot..

Ned
this is very true, and a good reason to have one, even if it's a humble springer.

a pusher's physical ability is not in question, and george is a very nicely detailed model of a real boat.

Thank you, kind sir...I would just say that Motorflotes are far superior to those awfully ugly Springing things.

(head behind ramparts, full metal jacket on, and standing by for incoming flak...)

Hi all

I like the look of building one of these as a quick weekend project...was contemplating taking a jump into a Springer, but there is something kind of comical about the boxyness of this little thing that is quite endearing!

Does anyone have a set of plans they would be willing to sell on?

Thanks!

Takes a bit longer than a weekend!

Using a bit of poetic licence....at my previous building rate - possibly a year's worth of weekends!

Plans for the 'Flote are like rocking horse droppings...I bought a copy of the magazine with plans from eBay. If you ask Andy at Models by Design nicely, he might provide you with a kit of the main parts ready to start building, all in styrene.

Good idea - I'll try eBay and see if I can find anything.

Is Models by Design the one that you built?
It does look really good, but wanted to have a look at the plans to see if I could build it in 2-3mm plywood from scratch...
I don't get much opportunity to do practical things (work, family commitments etc etc) so when I do, its nice to take my time doing all the measuring and cutting too.  Takes me ages, but that's the enjoyment I guess.  I tried building a couple of plastic kits, but couldn't get into it in the same way...?
Making a rod for my own back probably!

Hi David,

Yes, Andy made me a styrene kit from the original plans (after first getting permission from the original designer)...about £30 ish, I think. I really went overboard with detailing mine, seagulls and dogs...and of course, George himself.

They are great fun to use,  but they do tend to wander off on there own if you're not careful...

Woo Yay!

Set of plans for this little beauty secured c/o eBay for the princely sum of 99p!
...now I just need to find the time to build it!

Would it be worth modifying the underside to give it half a chance of being able to reverse?
ie rather than a vertical face in front of the prop, angling it (say 45deg) so that prop wash in reverse has a small chance of washing under?
Shouldn't be too hard should it, or am I missing something?

Mine has a habit sometimes of completely ignoring any commands given by me or the tx,  and just wandering off, doing it's own thing.  You input a right turn...'Flote thinks to itself "nah...I'm going off to the left".  Eventually it wakes up and goes where you wanted it to go. (that's ahead or astern)

They really are comical things to use on their own...hook up a barge to the front though, and it becomes a totally different animal...very responsive to the controls.

One quick question:

The plan shows it with a 1&3/4" (45mm) prop in a 2" (50mm) nozzle, driven by a monoperm.
I have a monoperm in the box of bits my dad left behind, but it looks awfully small to drive a prop of that size?
Isn't there a rule of thumb about the prop not being bigger diameter than the motor?

Just thinking...(yeah,  could be dangerous)...ok, mine has a 385 motor, straight drive, and turning a 35mm three blade plastic prop in a 40mm inside diameter plastic tube nozzle. I have a 12v 2900 AA sized battery pack, Mtroniks Viper 15amp esc, Futaba S3003 rudder servo, and a Turnigy electronic switcher for the lights.

That rule of thumb works well enough up to a point, but like most things there are exceptions.

All the same, it's a lot to ask of a monoperm to swing a 45mm prop direct, it would want gearing down about 2:1 i reckon. Or fit a smaller prop to allow the motor to rev.

From memory my Arcady ("Bob") has an MFA 385 direct driving a 35mm prop in a 40mm nozzle (well, plumbing waste pipe offcut)...runs pretty nicely: plenty quick enough and last for hours without getting hot... not sure I'd want to overstress it by fitting a bigger prop though

Unless I'm fairly confident of a combination working, I set a motor up in a test rig and measure the current being drawn with the motor held in bucket of water. Most motors are well documented enough to know if you're working the motor within decent efficiency.

Not hugely scientific I know, but good enough for our purposes.
