Remember this one?
« on: February 05, 2009, 04:15:25 PM »

Driving into town today I heard this on the radio.  Had not heard it in years.   Released in 1961 and reached no 1 in the UK and USA simeltainously i believe.   Where have all the years gone, who stole them, what have I done with them ?????   It still sounds great even now.

One of my favourite quotes from the 'King and I';

"It's not wise to interpret the commands of the King."

And there was a soap on BBC1 (the only channel we had) with that as the theme tune. Something about a hurricane at a caribean hotel I think. Anyone else remember it?

When we were on about the subject - of things having special meanings/memories this one holds a very dear memory for me.    I went to see my dad when he wasnt well, in fact it was the last time, I had a good conversation with him before he died.   What followed . - I was staying at my parents house to give them a bit of respite and it was 4 a.m. I heard my dad up - downstairs - so I got up too.   I went to look for him to help him back upstairs.     I had the most meaningful and most deep conversation I ever did have with my late dad.   I remember saying to my dad when you are gone its going to leave so much of a gap in my life - and my dad said - time always heals and fills holes in & that makes life worth living.   I remember when I got in the car to come home, I switched the radio on - and this was playing.

You were very lucky there John. My father was in denial as to what was happening to him during his final illness so we never had that conversation and we couldn't give him the comfort and love that he needed. Very bad for everybody concerned.

I built my first few record players from what was available in the local electronic store.  When I did my first stereo one, it used a valve amp intended for a different enclosure, and was sort of shoe-horned into the case where the speaker would have gone otherwise.  Being a valve type, it was awash with big knobbly high power resistors to drop voltage, which got hot.  Due to the realignment, one of these was, as I discovered, now directly below the main smoothing condenser.  Over time, this cooked, and blew its vent, emitting a large cloud of evil smelling smoke.
The record being played at the time?  An Acker Bilk LP.
The track?  Nobody knows the trouble I've seen.
