Which Car Blower Motor
« on: September 28, 2006, 10:50:46 am »

Here is a good one for you.
I heve finaly decided to power my 10 foot cruiser with either MFA 800's (3), or Car Blower Motors.
I have been in contact with my local scrappies, but they want me to take them off the cars.
SO
I am asking for which ones you have found or know to be good in large model Boats.
I used to use Cortina blowers, but cant get them now.

The Criteria are:
12 volt
Running about 5000 rpm
Not too power hungry ( thinking of Speed controllers cost, not battery power)
No more than 2 inches diameter ( so the MMM ones wont fit )
Armature end diameter has to fit Huco coupling end.

So come on lads save me lots of spanner work.
Over to you.

Contact Brian at Mobile Marine Models he sells blower motors brand new. His Type 8 motors should be big enough. They shove my Portgarth tug along very well.

Tugger,
I am familiar with these motors.
Smiths car Blower motors.
They are too large a diameter and too low reving.
These are to power a 10 Foot long Cruiser with scale running gear so will need at least 5000 rpm.

Hi Bob

Most car blower motors don't have an rpm much above 4500rpm but you can run them at 18 volts without a problem. I don't know of any that are less than 2 inch in diameter that will have the power output you require. eave a look at this site it might give you an idea of what you are looking for. http://www.boschmotorsandcontrols.co.uk/ As a general rule of thumb the bigger the car the bigger the blower motor. you also need to be aware that you might find one to do the job and go for the same type of car and find a different motor.  I would suspect that the motor you need to find will be 60mm dia or over. hope this helps

Regards

The old cortina motore would be ideal, powerfull, right size and revs, and not power hungry.
If all else fails I will use the MFA 800's, but more concerned about the current consumption than anything else.
See pics for the space and props.

i used smiths motors and they happily will handle 24 volts  with a reasonable sized prop, over prop them and i think they may draw a few amps, so consider the blower motors....

also if you do decide to go to the scrapyard and get some motors be careful, i once spent an hour or so carefully removing a cooling fan from a VW, when i got it home i found to my cost it only runs in one direction, - the damm thing would not reverse... apparently some older cars were like that.... no one told me! so dont make the same mistake!

A smaller more powerful motor are Vauxhall Astra radiator Fan motors I have seen these used on a tug and they are very good and are a smaller diameter than the Mobile marine motors.

Just been out and measured mine, yep I have an Astra, still too big.
I have found 2 x Hectoperms, taken the g/box off so got 2 for outer shafts, just need a motor for the centre shaft.

Hi there, I'm new to this site, and was trawling (forgive the maritime pun) for info about life boat models. More of that later, but re your query about motors:-
I have sitting here in my hotsweaty hand a blower motor from (I have reason to believe a Renault) a motor made by Siemens. Their part number is    1BB 3224    also marked on the case it says 8-13 volts. size, 45mm diameter (about 3/8" under your critical 2") length 83mm minus out put shaft. The out put shaft is 6mm diameter by 16mm. Unusually the brushes are mounted at the out put shaft end.
I am about to fit a pair of these into a life boat model (1/12 scale solent class) to see if it will push this at scale speed (about 1 1/2 knots actual).
As yet I do not have any data on the current draw or rotational speed, but I would imagine that over powering these motors by upping the voltage would be no problem if you could ensure a good air flow (they are very "open" at front and rear and should allow plenty of air flow through them.
Hope this may be of some use to you

in the meantime I'm looking for info and pics on the solent class life boat, in particular the Mumbles lifeboat (Swansea). I believe (but am happy to be corrected) that after service here in south wales it went o Loch Inver where it became named  the "george Uri Scott" any ideas?

I will be posting this enquiry elsewhere in the forum, but would be greatful if you know of anyone out there with any info you could pass this on to.

Thanks d-jnana (Gary)

I don't know for certain but I'd imagine that they are designed for high power short bursts (couple of seconds or so) whereas blower motors are intended for sustained quiet running. In fact the characteristics of the Johnson motors described on another thread would seem to fit starter motor criteria!

Yes a bike starter motor will get hot very quickly and then die, not meant for sustained running, just swing it over and turn it off.....
Been there and tried that....

d-jnana(Gary) here again.
further to the recommendation for the siemens motors I have just run one up on the bench unloaded.
Battery voltage measured 12.93v before test and during running dropping to 11.39v pulling a current of 0.98A totally light, and only pulling a peak of 1.79 amps fully stalled (output shaft burnig theumb and finger). OK I know this is not a very scientific test but may give some idea of what the motor is capable of. This would at best mean the motor is puuting out, or at least pulling about 24 Watts. I recon that by doubling the voltage you should get about 1/2 to 3/4 this output on top.
I'll give this a go tommorow if I get a chance. I'll see what an extended run time at 24v does to the teperature as well.

Hi Gary again,
Have now run one of these Siemens motors on 24v I,m getting similar current readings to 12 v, but with a significant increase in speed ( I have no way of measureing this but would estimate it to be well over your equired 5000 RPM). The temperature after 5 mins running light and loaded in free air was no more than luke warm to the touch. So if you could fit a low drain fan (perhaps a computer fan) you should have no problems with overheating.
Best of luck with the build.

One great source of motors are fitted to electric golf caddys.

These are about 50-70mm diameter, fully ballraced and spin at about 3000RPM. Very low current draw too.

My Dad fitted one of these in a French trawler, and it pushed it along at a fair old clip. The motor was from a brand of golf caddy called 'Powercaddy'.

The golfers chuck these away, usually when some other part breaks on the caddy, so if you have a golf club locally, it might be worth investigating.
