Coastal Tramp Steamer
« on: February 12, 2009, 06:38:10 pm »

Had a hull, wasn't sure what to do with it.

Anyway decided to do something on the lines of the old Ben Line coasters.

Could not obtain the right drawings so I am working off photographs mainly supplied by Footski. Thanks Barrie.

The hull isnt exactly correct but its not far off.

The first thing to do was raise the rear bulwarks to match the height of the bow,  this  was done in plasticard.

I then fiitted the propshaft and motor.

The next thing to do was make a rudder using brass rod, brass tube and plasticard.

This I did following bluebirds instructions in his FREDERICK SPASHETT – THE DRIFTER TRAWLER BUILD

http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=13888.msg133177#msg133177

Thanks John

Once this was done the servo was fitted.

The electrics were then connected temporarily and the motor and rudder were checked out.  :-))

I am using a 540MFA motor and an Mtronics Viper15 plug and play ESC, no setting up.

The decks were then cut to the correct size and rested on a bearer that I had fixed previously to check they fitted.

Its fairly easy Dave.

You take 5 photos, 2 side elevations and a plan view full frame on your camera, then you take a rear and front view and photos of any details.

You measure your hull length on the photo and divide your actual hull by this measurement.

Measure your dimensions on the photo and times them by your previous total to give you the dimensions on your model.

Not exactly accurate but near enough.

Dont give your model the name of an existing ship or your rivet counters will tell you where you've gone wrong.

Right, finished off the electrics, fixed ESC, fixed receiver, fixed fuse.

Fixed the battery tray. Going to need a lot of Ballast in the stern.

Glued in decks, filled round the edges and the ran diluted epoxy resin around the underneath perimeter of the deck.

Fixed the wash port covers.

Started on the bridge part of the superstructure.

Seems like that every day for me. I sometimes wish I could see myself at work to see how the time passes and the boat progresses so slowly.

Good work by the way.

All the best

Started on the bridge superstructure.

This is constructed of plasticard sandwiched between two thin sheets of birch ply.

The lighting in the photos is awful and it does look better in real life. Honest.

hi ya Dicky,

I know you are waiting for a comment from me about your new build  %)  (as per normal) like you have the rudder on upside down - can I make one comment - if you have a look at the Cervia build you might see how I put a false 'rudder post' and also a support around the propeller.    If you add one of these to your build it would finish your tail end off nicely.

Now, we have seen your modelling with plasticard and wood - I hope your next build will be a complete hull and fittings - because despite what you say to me - I think we all have a lot to learn from your builds  :-)) :-)) :-))

aye and I hope you get your electric put back on soon - cos Im sick of seeing them plugs and sockets on the bench - get em screwed to the wall and give yourself a bit more room  ;D {-) %%

aye

Had to repaint the antifouling on the hull as it was a bit low at the front.

Fitted the coamings round deck openings.

Started on the superstructure.

Put together 2 winches and a capstan.

Painted a load of white metal fittings, though I still have some more to come.

Fixed the bridge and the bridge ladders.

Sometimes a day's work does not become apparent until later.  She's coming on superbly, Richard. I'm following her with interest. Well done to you.
