The world famous IMARA (that everyone's talking about!)
« on: February 12, 2009, 08:58:37 pm »

I saw this section all nice and quiet and thought I'd make the first entry for 2009.

As you know, I am trying to build the IMARA.   This model boat been reported fraught with problems from the manufacturers. Non scale drawings. Parts unidentified. Parts not fitting. Shapes out of alignment. I could go on, but I'll stop there.

I am proceeding slowly (with the help of our illustrious membership) and taking photographs as I go along. I decided not to do a progress report, this time, but to try and finish it first.

However ............... here is what you get in the box, for £425.  (now gone up to £450 I notice.! ). You do get an awful lot of parts, which of course, you have to identify. Great fun and I'm actually enjoying it.

Wow....  what an inspiration, Martin. Thank you for that. I missed some of those in my research.

Loads of detailed pics there. I shall now stay in the wings until it's time to sink her.  ;)

If you like, I could start a  "what's this bit for"   picture gallery. :embarrassed:

That is a very nice model, Colin.  I have referenced it with my collection of pics, although I can't ever see me getting to this standard.

Ken,

If you put the model together like it says in the instructions ( but with a weather eye open for comments about the model on here) then yours will look like that too - no problem.

When I said "Yes please Ken" I was referring to your comment about a "what's this bit for section"

OK Brian. I'll photo some stuff and set the challenge.

My bags of fittings are still sealed and look a proper mystery to me. I recognise the steering wheel and a few obvious shapes. (and the tea cup with the bent handle!)

The company might have just numbered the bags at least to get you started. (Like Model Slipway does).  Lets hope they are sectioned together, eh!!

I'm up to deck level and could actually sail her if I wanted to, so now it's over to the nitty gritty detail.  I'll film some for next week, as I'm off to the boat show this weekend.

Well we got there in the end

                    The Imara is now finished.

Photo hosting courtesy of Imageshack

I am busy doing a build blog and a "You Tube"  film at the moment, till I noticed I've left off the Anchor and name plate.   {-)

Overall report is that she is a great looking ship when finished, but you you will need loads of patience and friendly advice to complete her. Total cost of the build is around £700 when you add the electronics and all the building materials.    (paints and glues and wood and plastic and chains and scale items, plus two 70 mm brass props  and a home build new extra smoke power unit)

I am now under threat of pain by my  'better half'  if I put her in the lake.  O0  so what's a chap to do ?

Cheers

Thanks Brian

Also thanks for the advice during her build. It's the hardest build I've ever done. Those drawings by Caldercraft eh !!  They've had 20 years to improve them and done nowt.

I'll send you the CD when it's done, as it's too big for "You Tube" so I'll have to shorten it for them.

Cheers

Thank you Colin. Praise indeed, much appreciated. I was only following your published build. My God, I needed it. Caldercraft's plans are a little short on brains, methinks!!!

"She who must be obeyed" has gone to town, so I'm going to fill the portable pool and see how level she floats. I WILL take your advice and fit the batteries after launching her. Scheesh, she's a heavy bird.

With the ACTion contoller, she should spin around without touching the sides.   ok2

I'll be taking a couple more pictures, in case I don't get the chance again.  %)

cheers

Ken

Mornin Terry

We'll be here all day, as we don't go out on Bank Holiday.

I'm doing some finishing touches on her. The washports have siezed up with paint, so I'm clearing them open for the expected flood. You know my sailing abilities  ok2

Have you finished with the Boston Typhoon drawings, please?  I'm ready to start the St Nectan and they could be useful.

Cheers

Hi Derek

Thank you for your kind comments. I do like a challenge (as you know !)

Having 'steered' my Waverley, I know what the real thing must be like. We have a skilled Captain there. The Press are always quick to jump on her little 'bumps' but it's part of her 'way' No damage done, just a noisy impact.

I've bought the "Glasgow" and she will be 2nd in line after I get through 'Mountfleet's' St Nectan.

Catch you again
