An Oily rag in a small insulated fernace (like an upright boiler about the size of a tin of beans) works well 95% of the heat and all the smoke go up the flue and you get clouds of black smoke (People do cough and sputter a bit if you get up wind of them) the trick is to control the air supply so its just alight & smoldering.
