SLA storage
« on: February 18, 2009, 07:46:49 am »

Hi. Most likely already covered but can you inform me on procedure to store SLA between sailings.
I have 4x 12v 7ahr SLA for my Missouri. They were last used in November and charged when returned home. I have finally gotten my volt meter fixed and the all show around 12.65v. is this OK or not. Do they need recharging when down to a certain level to maintain good reliability. Possibly next use will be in April.
Cheers, Adrian.

SLAs do hold their charge pretty well when recharged after use. I have found some of mine ar OK after 6 months but I usually give them a top up every three months to be on the safe side. If you have one of the cheap automatic chargers then they usually have a LED which shows when the battery is charged.

Adrian , SLA's are durable and robust (thats my opinion) and dont need looking after much . I am in the fortunate position of having a good supply of second hand batterys from various sources ,mobility shops etc, all i do woth mine is rig a wiring harness up and connect about 6 or 8 of them up together and put them on the charger and forget them .The reason for so many is that the charge on each batt is minimal ,less than 200ma  and as they are 7ah batts in question  this charge is less than 10% of the capacity, as for the voltage of left batts , as long as there is a show of nearly the output than they should be ok , i have recovered batts showing less than 10v and they are still working , happy charging  :-) .
