Nordkap Build
« on: September 26, 2008, 11:51:24 pm »

I'm currently building a Billing "Nordkap", although I haven't touched it for over 5 weeks, as we have been away in our caravan. I'm impressed with the kit - my first attempt at plank on frame - all the laser cut parts were excellent, and there's a wide selection of brass and plastic items for detailing. Some photos below, (workshop supervisor visible in the second photo).

Peter - very nice work in the Nordkap. I have had one in the box for several years, waiting for us to be settled long enough to make it worth building. I made a start on the planking of one about about 25 years ago, but it was then destroyed in a house move, hence my caution.

Thanks David. I have found the kit very enjoyable to build, and once I worked out where to put all the electricals it has gone together fairly quickly. I am replacing the kit deck planking with my own because of a slight variation I have made from the instructions.

i think if billings thought more about the r/c side of there ships they might have a better
following. i mean giving no info r/c gear install  that was the case with both of my billings ships

Bigford, I agree with you about the lack of info in the Billing instructions concerning R/C installation. I believe if I had no previous experience of R/C boat building, I would have been in trouble although, to be fair, Billing do say that some experience is necessary. However, if more detailed instructions on radio installation was included, more people may be tempted to have a go at Billing kits for on water use.

Footski, thanks for the comment - yes, it is my first attempt at plank on frame, and having successfully completed the hull, it gives me the confidence to try other, more complex, hull shapes. I had previously only built hard chine hulls.

I will post more photos as the work progresses.

Hey Peter,

How about posting a build on your Nordkap - I'm sure you have taken a lot of pics just like your recent holiday in UK {-) {-)

All jokes aside - you are doing a great job and especially as a first time plank on frame - see it ain't that difficult.

I'm currently researching a 1:72 scale Battleship - scratch build - now thats a lot of planks especially on the deck ???

Keep up the good work O0

Hi Martin,

I haven't taken many photos of the Nordkap build, just one or two of each stage. I didn't set out to record it as a step by step construction, just a log of the various stages of the build. I will try and do a more comprehensive one when I build my next project, a scratch built Grand Banks cruiser from a plan by Jim Pottinger, enlarged, which will also be plank on frame.

I will post some more photos of Nordkap as the build progresses.

I am enjoying following your Brave Borderer build, it's a great job.

G'Day Peter,

Aha, nothing like a scratchbuild - great way of learning what not to do. Looking forward to more pics of Nordkap and next build. BB is coming along okay - currently working on superstructure and will update BB post shortly.

Also researching Battleships. Thinking about HMS Warspite (2708mm) or HMS Vanguard (3429mm) at 1:72 scale. I like em BIG...might build both :D ::) ;D

A little advice - when researching models, don't go on ebay looking for books - have just spent a fortune. >>:-(

Here are some more pictures of my Nordkap build. I'm hoping to have it on the water in a couple of weeks time. The deck planking is some I cut myself from some sort of pine - I can't remember what type, I got a small piece from a local specialist timber merchant, and I've forgotten the name of the variety of pine. (Another senior's moment)   :embarrassed:

I have finally finished my Billing Nordkap, and here are some photos. She has not had her sea trials yet, I'm waiting for the wind to ease.

Looks good, Peter.

We would like plenty of pictures of her maiden voyage!

She looks very seaworthy, which I am sure she was designed to be so don't wait for a totally calm day.

Thank you all for the kind comments. I took her for her maiden voyage today - I didn't wait for complete calm Roger, although conditions were good at our lake, it is quite sheltered. The wind has been very strong lately, some houses unroofed and trees blown down, so I thought I had better wait for things to settle down a bit..
The model handled beautifully, and apart from a slight adjustment to lateral trim, she sat well in the water. Some pictures attached, including one of her on our (local council supplied) wash down table.

Thanks everyone. Our club has been invited to display at the Alstonville Agricultural Show today (Alstonville is a small town about 20 km from where we live), so Nordkap is on show there, together with about 20 other models from club members. I will take some photos and post them later.

Thanks Boris, I am very happy with the way it turned out.

We had a very successful day at the Alstonville Show, and even though it is primarily an agricultural show, our club's display of model boats created lots of interest. Nordkap had her first public outing, albeit a static one, although today (Sunday) she will have her first official club sailing. A few photos of our display are attached.
