Radio Control problem - Help!
« on: February 27, 2009, 07:13:33 pm »

Hi there to everyone - I'm new here and also new with this radio control stuff.

I'm building a Model Slipways Drumbeat of Devon, with two motors. I'm OK with the build, but am having issues with the radio control.

When I start up the radio control system, the solid state motor speed controllers are driving when the handset is is on, but not being operated.  I know this is not a trim control problem and the rudder servo appears to be working normally.  I have tried to keep power and control segregated so I dont believe it would be an interference problem.

I'm sure its something I've done - wish I knew what! I'm quite technical (engineer) although not really got much knowledge of electrics.

If anyone has any ideas and could point me in the right direction I would be so pleased. :-)

Hope someone is out there!

I had this. Recheck your receiver connections. Can the plugs be put in two ways ?

Change the rudder and motor plugs over.

Mine was simply fixed but I cant remember which one of the two solutions I used.

Hi again

My speed controllers are viper marine 20 (from Howes, Oxford) and the radio control system is a Hitec Laser 4.  Hope that gives a bit more clarity.  I think (?) everything is connected the right way round?

if using separate power pack for the rx, remove the middle connection on your rx to esc lead,as its using to many volts

It might be that your ESCs have some sort of pushbutton or small adjustment trimmer which you need to tweak in order to shut off the motor when your transmitter throttle is at neutral. Or (less likely), it might be that the throttle stick itself has slipped out of alignement.
In the case of the former, the instructions which came with your ESCs will show you how to make the necessary adjustment. If it is a case of the latter, then to re-align the throttle stick is an easy fix that you can do yourself.
Holler if you need assistance with that.

Hi everyone - thanks for the input.  I'm off to do all the normal Sat stuff but when I get back hopefully I can get it right.  Watch this space!

 :embarrassed:

OK - if all else fails, read the instructions!  I hadnt set up the ESC neutral position and it works!   Thanks for the direction - would never have thought to look at instructions.  The wife would say its a man thing.
