« on: September 30, 2006, 01:55:50 pm »

HI Folks..

Whats the difference between Sealed Lead Acid and Rechargeable Lead Acid batteries?? Maplins are stocking both.  I need a couple of 12V & 6V batteries but as I say, whats the difference between the two types. (PMK - Not the voltage  ;D)

As you would expect the SLA is a sealed unit nothing to do to it but charge and use, Normal lead acid batteries have caps on the cells and need to have the acid refilled occasionally, but I would suggest you do not use normal lead acid batteries in a confined space in a boat as they give of some toxins that are conducive to going bang and also love eating anything that is possible to be dissolved...simple choice really  SLA...

Another advantage of SLA batteries over 'ordinary' lead acid battery is the SLA's can be laid in virtually any position whereas the ordinary LA need to be upright else the acid may seep out from the cell screw tops.
