Looking for advice on how to build one of these.....
« on: March 07, 2009, 09:00:59 pm »

45 x 20mm  Im not wanting the door to swing open and shut just after some advice on how to make it look good.  Can anyone tell me how far it should stick out from the main superstructure at 1:36 scale?

Thanks,

My brain cell tells me that an external w/t door would be dished about 50mm. You do the maths!

1.4mm....  Cheers.

Macs mouldings don't seem to have what im after.  I was thinking about cutting the shape out of 1.5mm styrene but im not sure how to get the hinges and handles etc...

The 'dogs' would not be all on one side as shown in your sketch.  If there are 4, I would expect to see one central on each side.  For a full height door, it's more likely to be one at top and bottom and two at each side. The hinges are likely to be similar to a rudder's pintle and gudgeon with the gudgeon on the door. The doors are prevented from riding up by washers and split pins on the pintles.

hi there Gary

have a look at the Spashett build - you can see the way I made the hinges for the doors on there.  As for the water-tight catches, you could just use thin copper wire bent at right-angles so that it overlaps onto the door.

I built the door panels up using styrene.
Then placed a set of small diameter rods down
on side to represent hinges. Door wheels will be
plastic snaps that someone suggested in another
thread for use as hand wheels.

A typical water tight door http://www.marine-doors-hatches.com/pic1102.html

I made some that work (even the dogs!), but it was much easier in 1:10 scale.
