1/72 Prinz Eugen
« on: October 01, 2006, 10:41:52 am »

Hi All,
I have been posting questions about the power for this model so thought a few pics and a brief history might whet some appetites.

This model was started some 16 yrs ago. The first hull was scrapped as it was warped, so the builder started all over again.
This is obviously a labour of love as some of the detail is absolutely superb!!

Unfortunately the builder passed away with the hull complete and quite a lot of the superstructure part built.
The hull we wrapped in bedspreads and put in the garage and the superstructure packed in boxes for just over 10 yrs.

I bought her unseen, on some 15 yr old photos.
Ripped my car out and went to collect her (the hull is just over 10 foot long).

When I got her home and all unpacked there was some damage to running gear and hull and of course the superstructure parts. G. Sitek made a new Prop and supplied a new shaft as the props were original Ted radestock's. Superb job too!!
I have been working on her for a year now on and off.
The hull has been repaired, repainted and the decks rubbed down and re-varnished, so back to where she was 10 yrs ago, but in different colours.
The superstructure is plasticard and has started to go brittle, but is in the process of being repaired and completed ( only started that yesterday ).
Hope you like the pics.

Bob,

It looks absolutely fantastic! Still a big job - should keep you busy! Very nice paint job on the hull by the way.  ;)

How are you planning to deal with the brittle plasticard? There is a whole lot of it on that model!!

Looking forward to more pics as you progress! Cheers, Brian

I already have the Revel Kriegsmarine figures, 2 boxes. But not going to put too many on her, why, all that fiddly painting of uniforms!!
And yes as I get olger I do prefer to work 1/48th, but in patrol boats.
I have always wanted to build a 1/72 Prinz eugen, I have had the plans for over 7 yrs now, was going to be my retirement project!!
That just leaves my 1/48 scale Ocean Going Tug that I was on for a few happy years.
And before anyone asks, NO I wasnt on Prinz Eugen.

Motors going in.
I did have some motors so decided to use what I had.
2 x hectoperms without g/boxes on outer shafts, jonson on 3:1 reduction all running on 6 volts.
In the pics you will see the brass tube used for lining up motors and my volt/ammeter for checking voltage and current, this will also chech the battery under load. Very useful.
I Epoxied the Centre Motor and Cardan Shaft in, but is a bit noisy.
The outer motors are just laid in their mounts to allow the silicon to harden overnight before final fitting.
The centre motor on first rum was pulling just over 8 amps free, with a little running in it now pulls 3 in air, I was expecting 4, so not bad.
Dont know if I will keep this centre motor though, as this will be used as her cruising power as it washes over the rudder.
If it isnt too good then I do have an old 6 volt Deccaperm earmarked to go in.

i only popped over for a bit of help with my Severn on sunday and already you have fitted the motors and gearbox's in the hull, theres nothing like having a lot of time on your hands to build  ;D

keep up the quality building mate then before you know it she will be on the water looking mighty fine indeed.

Sorry, yes me being slow again.
There isnt much I can do with it as I do intend to keep as much original as possible in memory of her builder.
It is only the beveled edges that seem to break off, and usually with a clean break along the  glue join.
To be honest I am surprised at how well she has survived for 15 yrs.
I suppose with the plasticard being out of ultra-violet light this has helped preserve it.
Does made me wonder just how long plasticard will last?
The 1st Deck of the superstructure is 2mm plasticard and is as good as the day it was built, it is only the 1/2mm or less that has suffered.

Bob, would it be possible to post some pictures that aren't too big?

I have always liked Prinz Eugen as she is such a similar line to the Bismarck so I would love to see this model.

Bob, that is an absolutely stunning model which I am sure will look superb when completed.  I can't beleive it is the same scale as most people make model aircraft in!!  The scope for detail is staggerring but the time it will take will be equally so.

I am sure you will do her justice though and produce a model you will be proud of.  It must also be a labour of love to complete a model started by someone who has passed away and will be all the more poignant to see it on the water.

I see what you mean with the central prop though.  If that wasn't powered the manoeuvrability would be very much reduced so I am sure it is worth doing.  I would be a bit concerned though with the central motor being reduced 3:1 and the two outside ones being direct.  This would cause a lot of slip and cavitation of the central prop and would therefore disrupt the flow over the rudder.  I would try to have them all spinning at the same speed if possible and try to optimise the flow over the entire back end.  I would even go so far as to have three identical motors to ensure that you get this or, another possibility, one motor driving all three shafts through a gearbox.

I think as you are so far down the line though I would get a third motor the same as the outboard two and put that in the middle.

Bunkerbarge,
I am considering using the outboard shafts for manouvering, but the centre chaft for cruising.
But might even use a mixer.
I have had a 1/96 Scale Prinx Eugen which had the 2 outside shafts for running and centre shaft for additional speed and she went well, but I am prepared to experiment.
If I get the speed right I will know which rpm to use from the motors, so might re-motor with Graupner motors!!

I think experimentation is definately the order of the day but I would expect you to get far more effective manoeuverability from the centre shaft as that is flowing over the rudder.  I am assuming there is one central rudder but I am not absolutely certain from the pictures.

If I have misread the pictures and there are two then definately the two out board shafts will be more effective for turning.

There is one central rudder, but even on her trials (of the real ship) there were complains about manouvering on the rudder.
The Bismark had 3 shafts but 2 rudders.
In my old 1/96 scale one she had to turn with shaft assistance so it isn't a huge problem.
Anyone got good or bad reports on mixers?
never used one as usually prefer 2 sticks for throttles.

To be honest she is well wrapped up and put away for the winter.
Possibly me being over cautious but prefer to work on her in more temperate weather till she is well varnished.
I am still fiddling with some smaller parts though.
But this winter I have to get a Type 21 frigate and a girl class tug finished.
She is still a bit daunting as well so like to decide exactly what I am going to do next then complete it.

Plus I keep getting sent back to sea, so time getting limited.
