Posted due to members who build the lifeboats

A memorial service is to be held in the Highlands to mark the 40th anniversary of the Longhope lifeboat disaster.

Eight men lost their lives when the vessel was caught in a severe storm after launching from Hoy in the Orkney Islands.

The Longhope lifeboat was capsized by a huge wave on 17 March 1969 after answering a mayday call from a Liberian steamer.

The vessel was found floating upside down the next day.

All eight crewmen died, including two fathers who each had two sons on board.

One of the victims, whose body was never recovered, was Jimmy Swanson from Dunnet in Caithness.

His widow presented a commemorative font to Dunnet Church, where the service was to be conducted on Sunday evening.

Lifeboat crews from Thurso and Longhope were expected to attend, along with many others linked to the tragedy.

They will be in my thoughts and prayers on that day as have been every year since that tragic event in 1969.
God bless them and their families, always,
Neil.
