Soldering - help please!
« on: March 22, 2009, 05:02:43 pm »

Hello all,

I want to solder some brass rails  2thou - half a mill dia - plus I also want to do some soldering regards electrics.
I do not really want to buy two tools so I am hoping someone out there can recommend one iron for both jobs.
I really do not want to use a flame as I have a tendency to take my eye of the ball, so to speak, and the flame could end up going somewhere it was not meant to go!!
I would prefer an electric one if possible.

Any help and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Ron.

Hi Ron ,
a small iron will be good for general electrical work (tinning and soldering wire) but if you plan to solder single strand for railings then without going for the eye ball burning torch  a soldering gun may be more usefull , if you can get one thats 100 watts . I have a weller gun that has served me for the last ten years and is still going strong , i have only had to replace the tip .
Just a thought

I like Daz use a Weller gun to solder my railings. Heats up really quick and the solder runs fast, it doesn't tend to heat up everything around it.

Its also great for soldering cables to motor cans.

get some Bakers Soldering Fluid No3 this will help any brass soldering even if you are using solder with Flux in, this makes a difference.

I do all my smaller railing sets with a 30 watt soldering pen and flux.
Flux is a necessatiy. I flux the area at a joint, melt some solder on the tip
of the soldering iron, and touch the solder to the joint... Done.

For larger or heavier duty solder joints a torch and silver solder are more appropriate.

Hi Ron,
This may not help as you prefer to use an iron. But if you decide to use a torch in the future here is a method that works for me as I use a lot of brass. The torch I use is a small refillable butane pencil torch, nice small contractible flame. Liquid flux that can be applied with a small brush and solder. On small st ansions I apply liquid flux to the joint and cut off a small bit of solder and place it on the joint. Now I apply the heat from the pincer torch to the opposite side of the st ansion and this will cause the solder to flow in the direction of the heat. I will also use a piece of wet paper towel on any area I do not want to melt. I always have an extinguisher at the ready in my shop which is a good addition to any shop at all times. I have not used a soldering iron in years.
Good luck
