It's incorrect to refer to the sail of a modern submarine as a conning tower, as 'conning' on modern submarines takes place below in the main pressure hull alongside other functions.

That will be a quick fix, cut the old sail off, build a new one and install new periscopes and other electronics and you are done. Probably no damage to the pressure hull. Now I bet the ride when it happened was something that no one wants to do again, I'll bet that she rolled 45 degrees or more. From what I have heard that no one was killed just some broken bones and such.

Who and what hit it? If it was something like a big tanker then the sub must be to blame, but if it was a "friendly" warship then it should have known better. Back in the early 1970s a sub (can't recall if it was a Canadian or RN) had its as then called "conning tower" sliced off by RFA "Grey Rover". This was in the Clyde trials area. The RFA had no idea that a sub was underneath it trying to take photos of the props etc. Sub got too close and well, the obvious happened. I think it must have been an RN sub as the MoD first tried to pin the blame on the RFA. The Canadians would never have been so duplicitous. A large "chunk" of the tower was presented to the "Grey Rover" as a trophy.

One story on the collision....

From Commander, U.S. 5th Fleet Public Affairs

MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) — A U.S. Navy submarine and U.S. amphibious ship collided in the Strait of Hormuz March 20, 2009.
The collision between USS Hartford (SSN 768) and USS New Orleans (LPD 18) occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. local time (5:00 p.m. EDT, March 19).
Fifteen sailors aboard the Hartford were slightly injured and returned to duty. No personnel aboard New Orleans were injured.
Overall damage to both ships is being evaluated. The propulsion plant of the submarine was unaffected by this collision. New Orleans suffered a ruptured fuel tank, which resulted in an oil spill of approximately 25,000 gallons of diesel fuel marine. Both ships are currently operating under their own power.
The incident is currently under investigation.
Both the submarine and the ship are currently on regularly scheduled deployments to the U.S. Navy Central Command area of responsibility conducting Maritime Security Operations (MSO).
MSO set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. MSO deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons, or other material.

May be jumping to the wrong conclusion here, but if only the subs sail was "bent" and the Hartford had a rupyured fuel tank it looks like the sub came up under the Hartford....subs fault. BY.

I spent a tour on a Perry class frigate. I know from experience the subs would hide under a vessels shadow, duplicating speed, and every turn. Some nights in the tongue of the Atlantic, off the Bahamas, you could actually see them because of the glowing plankton being stirred up by their wake.
The acoustic signature was virtually undetectable by us, because of the noise our ship was making. Without active pinging by sonar, we'd never know they were there. I can see where it would be easy to bend the sail under such circumstances. Some young JO that had the con at the time probably has a very tender backside!
