researching SOLNET CLASS lifeboat
« on: October 03, 2006, 09:23:44 pm »

Hi any body got any pics or drawing of the solent class lifeboat, The one I'm particularly interested in is the MUMBLES LIFEBOAT. When stationed here it did not ( as far as we know have a name). I believe that when it left Mumbles it went to Loch Inver and became known as the "GEORGE URI SCOTT."
I'm happy to be corrected on any of the above "facts" and would appreciate any help you can give.

What I do already Know:-
Built by Camper & Nicholson
48 foot 6 (except the mumbles boat, 18 inches shorter to fit in the lifeboat house)
twin Gardener 6 lx diesels

Have tired all the usual internet searches and can find very few images of any use, or any documentary evidence come to that.

thanks in anticipation

Hi,
according to my reference books, George Urie Scott ( 48-004) was never stationed at Mumbles.

It was built in 1969, and was the full 48'6" length on the steel hull.  It was stationed at Lochinver from 1969 to 1978, Rosslare Harbour 1979 to 1984, back at Lochinver from 85 to 89 before spending a year in the relief fleet and then being sold out of service.  It was last seen in October 2005, unaltered from it's service appearance, in use as a trip boat at Spaarnham in Holland.

From 1974 to 1985 the Mumbles station boat was a 47 foot Watson class, wooden hull rather than the steel hull of the Solent.

This boat was built in 1957, Official No. 940, and was "RNLB Pentland (Civil Service No 31)".  The name indicates that this was the 31st lifeboat donated by the Civil Service Lifeboat Fund.

It was stationed atThurso  1957 to 1970, Releif fleet 1970 to 74, Mumbles 1974 to 85, Workington 1986 until 1990 and sold out of service in 1991.  She was last seen in March 2005, still carrying the name PENTLAND and was unaltered and in use as a pleasure boat at Dickies boat yard, Bangor.

You could try dropping them an email to see if she is still there,  the web site is http://www.dickies.co.uk

also take a look at http://www.nelsonsboats.co.uk/boatdescription.html?BoatID=99

Nelsons Boats specialise in selling ex RNLI lifeboats, and the link above goes directly to the George Urie Scott, which by good luck they currently have for sale  :o

just also found this one   http://www.nelsonsboats.co.uk/boatdescription.html?BoatID=66  they actualy sold PENTLAND but still have the details and pictures on the for sale list !

Must say it's easy at first glance to say it looks like a Solent !

Hope that helps

Hi Aston, Thanks. I have obviously been barking up the wrong tree altogether. Thanks again. I do know where the Watson class is and I know its name. I THINK. perhaps you know better and again I'll be happy to be corrected.
as far as I know the boat was called the William Gammon. this boat is currently part of the collection owned by the National Waterfront Museum of Wales here in Swansea. It is not currently on public display, but in a storage facillity at Landore in Swansea. I have made contact with the museum today and they are able to arrange a research visit to photograph and measure the vesel, and all for free.

Thanks again I'll try the links you have given me thanks.

Hi Gary,

glad to be of help.  All the info on the two boats (George and Pentland) were taken directly from the Lifeboat Enthusiasts' Society 2006 Yearbook  which gives details of every boat ever built by the RNLI, even those which were never taken into service ( like the 3 Medina class boats) so I assume it to be about as right as you can get.

This book even has the Official No. and intended station of the first 8 of the Tamar class boats, and also lists FCB2  and gives a length of 44'2" for this new boat  :o

Just had a look in the "Bible", William Gammon was an earlier Mumbles boat, a 46'9"Watson class, Official No 849, built in 1947.  She was on station at Mumbles from 1947 to 1974, then in the releif fleet from '74 to 1982.

The good book says she was sold out of service in 1983 and was stored at the Museum of Wales centre at Nantgarw.  Cardiff as at June 2005.

Cheers
