Hidden Aerial ?
« on: April 01, 2009, 12:33:14 pm »

I had the idea of hiding the tail end of the RX aerial in the barrel of the Bofors which will be stern of my PT boat. The barrel material is aluminium, would this have the effect of "screening" the aerial or will it make no difference???. What are the "For's and Against's"  {:-{
Cheers

it will probably screen the antenna.  how long is the barrel? cut the requisite amount off the antenna and solder the antenna to the barrel.  be like using railings as the antenna.

Many thanks, Ghost ,for your comments. The barrel will be around 3" which is probably of little use for RX purposes. Its just that I'm not sure how to site the aerial for full reception and it seemed to me to be a good idea to site at least some above deck rather than spread it out inside the hull (Balsa). Or would this work OK??
Thanks for your advice.

I have several boats where the aerial is horizontal within the hull (both balsa and ply) which run at ranges of up to 100yds (approx) with no problem.

Many thanks Doug for your input and I'm pleased to hear of your success with the horizontal configuration, that is the news I was hoping for!!! . I have been digging into the Mayhem archive and there seems to be a mass of info on the subject but what seems to shout out is, as someone pointed out (FLJ I think) , try it out and see what works for your particular set up, so I will start with an internal position and see where that takes me.  Thanks again for your advice it is really helpful.

Hey we're neighbours, I must come over to Fairlands sometime to nick a few ideas!!!!. I belong to Welwyn Garden City Society of Model Engineers, great bunch who have helped me with all sorts of aspects of Model Boating.
