Footie know how sought.
« on: April 02, 2009, 06:52:58 pm »

I've been persuaded to build a footie to complement my buddys' (and hopefully to generate some club interest) and have opted for a swingrig setup (carbon fibre mast and booms) as opposed to my Buddys' traditional sloop rig.

Question:-  should the base of the mast (within a tube glued to the keel )be fixed in position to prevent rotation whilst  - hopefully - sailing, or should it be permitted to rotate freely should it so desire?

Thanx in anticipation of any responses.

Popeye,

Welcome to the world of footydom :}
There is a Health warning youshould be aware of {-)
Footys are dangerously addictive and you may have a lot of Fun!

In answer to your question:  It all depends!

The footy swing rig expert par excellence is Roger Stollery (indeed the anything swing rig expert)  Roger makes the mast and main/jib holders all rigidly bonded together and the mast rotates in a tube fixed to the boat.

He may have a bearing fitted to the bottom of the tube - perhaps a ball on which the mast rests - but as long as it rotates fairly freely all willl be well.

For one meeting I fitted a swing rig to my Razor (its second outing).  I made the mast fixed and allowed the "booms" to pivot around it - this seemed to work quite well too (but I'm not a roger S!)

What boat are you making?  Have you discovered this resource?
http://www.rcsailing.net/forum1/forumdisplay.php?f=61

Where there is a lot of discusswion of rigs, swing rigs and indeed "the whichness of the what"

Happy to answer any questions - or point you to an expert

Andrew, Roger has now moved away to a fixed mast with a wire gooseneck that rotates round the mast and is prevented rising up the mast by a piece of Teflon
The wire is then slotted into both booms

Hi Martin,
I've been building some DIFFERENT footy's and could do a build on the next one.
They are in this wiki

http://windling-footys.wikispaces.com/

and if you follow the link on page two (click on the plan photo) this will take you to my web-site for plans.
If anyone would be interested.
Also hope soon to have some little hull laser-cut kits available. (and sails, rigging and fittings kit as well)
Will also be building some other wooden boat footy's soon, such as a dhow, junk, and a few others.
These are all footys for fun sailing, even though they are designed to comply with the 'footy rules'
cheers

I attach a few shots of my first Footy and hope that they may be of help to anyone who is contemplating building one

The model is built from Martin Schillers' free plan 'Papaya III and was chosen 'coz it was the only plan I could find with a swing-rig.

Weight is 450 grammes ready to sail.

It's hull is 0.7mm ply, with a 4mm carbon fibre tube mast and 3mm c/f tube swing rig booms.

Oops, I messed up good and proper. I don't think I'll ever get used to this new fangled technology.

Hopefully , a few shots of my first Footy are now attached,

PS Sincere thanks are extended to Andrew Halstead (AndrewH) and Roger Stollery for their help and infinite patience in responding to my numerous 'how's it done' questions relating to Footy builds.

I have one of these on my list of projects, but as I'm a free sailer it'll probably be more trad looking when I get around to it.

I would eventually like to build a Footie, where can I find instructions for building the "swing rig?"

Hi Martin,

I presume you're referring to the swing rig booms and mast fitting and not how to build a 'Footy'?

There are a number of free plans, plus oodles of general info  available from footy.rcsailing.net though nought - with one exception to my knowledge - in respect of construction of either the rig or hull.

Email me via Mayhem  'n I'll  pass on valuable tips etc. given to me by both Roger Stollery ( UK model yacht designer ) and  another Mayhemer (AndrewH)- it'll be quicker and more comprehensible than trying to put it all on paper

I await your response,

Regards

1. OK but smaller step by step stages is (are?) my personal preference... I always have problems with simple instructions.  :embarrassed:
2. As above. Photo instruction, photo, instruction.... but that's just me!
3. Done.  :-))

Martin see what you think to the German swing rig, I know it was for a different Class but the principles are the same and i felt that seeing it on a larger scale helped anyway

Thank you for doing the thread title change but i should have been more specific as i have some other more simple builds i would like to share - Could i ask that you change it to "Footy Pirate Bottle Build" so as to be distinguishable from the others

Thanks in anticipation
