I think it is likely that external connections are more likely to be at fault.
If you swap the esc output to rudder servo or insert a different esc into what you think is a dodgy output you might find that a servo connector plug is faulty.

The metal bits in the plug can  be removed by gently lifting the plastic flap retaining them (sometimes by pressing the metal flap down, depends on make) and GENTLY pulling out, or pushing with a pin from below.  The connection can then be checked, sorted with a soldering iron if required, and reassembled.  It could well be that the receptacle or pin has gained a bit of corrosion or muck or might just need a VERY GENTLE tweak before reassembly to ensure that there is good pressure to make sure of a good electrical contact.
Thats assuming the problem is at the plug end of the wire.  If its anywhere else, much depends on the make of ESC.  Some you can get at the innards to change the lead, others are seal for life.  This means that when it goes wrong, its dead.

If you are new to radio control or not confident in your own skills to fault find the problem, my advice is to go to your nearest club, model shop or model boat show. It could be a simple cheap fix is all thats needed, I can't see the point in just ordering up a brand new esc if your having a hard time trying to understand how it works or trying to do it yourself as you could be throwing good money away. Its all too easy for those of us who know it all one here to get a newcomer totally lost and dissenchanted with a load of technical talk, actually getting help face to face for just a few minutes is worth more than a thousand words.
