Tugboats from Rudder
« on: April 06, 2009, 05:47:09 pm »

Hello

Years back I bought book  Designs to inspire in wich are lots of various designs from Rudder magazine.
They all fascinates me each in its own way , but the most I like these two little tugboats.
I tryed Google them for photos but I guess that I am looking in wrong direction.
So I am looking for any information that could help me find anything useful.
Thanks in advance

Hi there,

I have recently started a model of the Craig, from the Model Boats magazine plan. She was designed by J.Murray Watts and built by Craig Brothers Marine Railway Company of Norfolk, Virginia around 1924. My information tells me that she was built as a diesel tug, powered by a three cylinder Fairbanks-Morse, 150 horsepower engine. I am running a build thread which you can see here should you wish to.

If you do find out anything else about the tug, I would be grateful for any information you can pass on. I will do likewise..

I don't suppose your book has any details on the steam Tugs Mon or Yaw Built by Hawthorn Leslie for the Burmah Oil company around the turn of the 19-20th century. I'm really interested in any line drawings that might exist. I've tried all the usual sources including the BP archive but with no luck.

Thanks

Hallo

I only found this thread from another forum. Is that the same plan you mentioned?:

See if pictures of the Henrietta Foss are close enough to be of any use.

Thanks for help everyone, nice photos. :-) Few questions come to my mind because I really don't know much about tugboats.
What were their hulls made of -wood or iron (steel). I see on photos that both were used.
And question about Craig what is building plan like- I only have drawings I posted earlier and where could I obtain them?
For hull itself I would imagine that these drawings are good enough but I don't know what deck and top of wheelhouse are like.
Thanks in advance

The plans are very good indeed and very reasonably priced. I have had no trouble at all following them, and if I can do it then anyone can!!

You can get them from here:

Sorry Barry I misread the posts. The query should have been directed at Sjoormen.

Sorry in this booklet there are only the two tugboats .
It is nice book though and there quite few interesting designs in it most are sailboats and few launches, runabouts and other crafts, but as I said only two tugs. Btw anyone knows where to find plans for New York Central Tugboat as in this link:

I also have few questions I forgot to mention about these tugboats if someone could help me with.
Hulls of these boats -were they wooden or iron? Were rudders iron?
I also don't know how to make ring round chimney(exhaust don't know correct term)at the base -it is oval like.
And another thing that I must think of is propulsion- i was thinking speed 900 motor and 60 or 65 mm propeller (graupner) boat is about 83 cm long.

Some progress until now. It is far from perfect, especially compared with Craig from Mr. Footski. But I need this boat for rescue missions ;) and not for static display, so... Still lots of details to do:

Sjoorman,

Thanks for the compliment, but yours looks good to me. That reminds me, I must start a build log of Craig sometime...

Thanks. I wish your build would be done by now, so I could get some new ideas. Today I made this slipway. I got no photos for this so I made it from my imagination. As I said it is my first build like this,so I hope you like it.

That is unusual, but could look great with a bit of TLC. Light sanding, wood stain and varnish. This is the one I have built for Craig. Not quite finished but almost..

Yes, I like yours very much , but I don't know if it is strong enough to carry boat in the car? BTW what is  TLC? Oh another question: does anybody have photo of winch of these tugboats. It looks from plans that it was man driven -is that true? Please correct me.I found this photo in the internet-does anyone know builder?
