First time sub - Revell GATO
« on: April 06, 2009, 07:05:28 pm »

Hi guys.....just bit the bullet and bought a revell gato.............question is whats the best way of making it go......static or dynamic.....or just as a surface runner..........you will gather from this that i know absolutely diddly squat about submarines..........

                          regards....bob.

If you know "diddly squat" about model subs then there is a mountain of irrelevant information to duck.
Bearing that in mind you could......
  • actively seek out and follow the example of those who run such models successfully with ease.
  • just ask the specialists in that field to trawl their favourites folder for Revell Gato build logs.
There are quite a few on this forum who fit the first category which does not include me!

I made mine surface runner, seemed a bit on the difficult size to cram everything in to make it a static diver, ran well on the surface  :-))

Hi Russell,
I'm also going to make mine a surface raider, could you show us a few pictures of the internals?

Sorry Martin, i have just trawled through the photos and come up with nothing!  I have one picture showing the motors, i only took a few photos of her on the water..

If you need any pointers then give me a shout, i installed two MFA motors running 3mm shafts, one fixed to each half of the hull, took a bit of lining up, installed new rudder and assembly with the servo fixed to one half of the hull.  Once the two halves were joined i cut out an access hole which the deck sits over and istalled a small 12v 1.2ah lead acid..

Caswell in America sell the Dave Merriman conversion kit for the Gato to turn it into a fully static diving RC sub

http://www.caswellplating.com/models/gato.html

or you can get the Big Dave WTC kit for it as well http://www.frontiernet.net/~bwelch/gato.htm

The guys in the US have built a lot of these kits into static diving subs over the last year or so. Have a look through the builds on the www.subcommittee.com website or the www.subpirates.com site

Tubulent on this site has built a static dive one, and there has been a write up in Marine Modeling magazine. A surface runner should be similar to most other plasic conversions.
