I used to be able to toss a grapple from the stern of my destroyer.
It used the co2 from the gun system, but only the small actuator valve.
I mounted a brass tube on the boat at a 45° angle and would fire a
small piece of brass rod about, 12mm long, off the boat.
Tied to the top was a line, the short end about 75mm tied to the grapple.
the long end coiled on the deck with the other end tied to a brass loop.
The loop would be locked into a servo operated release hook.
When fired, the brass rod would shoot about 30mm up and about a meter out from
the back of my ship, carrying the grapple and line with it. It was typically thrown over
the bow or stern of the stricken ship, and the grapple would catch a flag staff or bullwork
and the stricken ship could be towed in. If the stricken ship was caught up and anchored
in millfoil, or other weeds, the brass loop could be released, leaving it floating on a bobber,
and my ship could pull away.
:)
We used it so seldom, that I eventually removed the thrower from the deck.
During a combat, if a team couldn't immediately push another stricken ship in
with thier own destroyer, that ship would be quickly shot up. There was typically
no time to bring a boat in, set up the throwing line and get back before the
stricken ship was targeted and taking heavy damage.
