My little Pollux is very well used, my favourite tug at the moment has to be my 1/48 scale robust tug, first sailed last Sunday and she is superb.

Hopefully sailing her if the weather holds out tomorrow.

I think the Rumania is really my favourite as it is the earliest tug that I can remember going aboard, my Dad was chief engineer for 4 years and went around the world in herand did a tow from Sydney to Genoa which took 4 months, she was the Empire Susan originally

The model appears to be wearing glossy pink paint. Was this the colour of the full-size ship?

Bonjour,

Mine is the Côte d'Emeraude (France Maquettes kit proposed with a Stuart D10 in the seventies), a diesel tug in the real life, currently dying in  the Havre harbour, but I started it 45 years ago with the birth of my steam passion, abandoned it and found it back 40 years later :

Hello

They are so many in different categories and different times  %%

May I say actual harbour Voith tug Velox - Tenax and sisters

Yesterday large ocean tug Wolraad Wolteman - John Ross

Ironically Raphaël the Côte d'Emeraude is one of the ugliest tug I've ever seen.   She was not dying in le Havre harbour but Saint Malo then now she's really dead, cut and near to reborn as razor blade or tin can.

If you want to have a tear ...

Bonjour Christian,

Thanks for the link and the correction of my mistake. I agree with you, she is not the nicest, but she was almost the lonely one sold at that time, with a 120 mm brass four blades propeller and a Stuart D10...

I am sad to learn that the real Côte d'Emeraude has been dismantled, but who cares now... ?

Hello

In fact Raphaël it's true that sometime the most beautifull is not a favorite - inversely a lovely or pleasant tug is better than just a beautifull one ... same as with a girl  :embarrassed:

Well, it has to be Meeching, for obvious reasons. Still going strong at the age of 55 as Nore Crest. I also like ocean going tugs and Elbe is top of my list.

For me, it has to be Yorkshireman of United Towing.  Launched in 1978 and still sailing today:

I bought the Model Slipway kit way back in 2003 and made a start on it, but hadnt really touched in for the past 10 years (she has been sitting on a shelf in our living room most of that time).  However, for the past week I have been pressing on with her whilst waiting for various bits n pieces for the ferry kit prototypes.

For me its the SS Master on Canada's west coast. Preserved and operating triple expansion steam.

My favourite looking tug has to be the one I saw in about 1978, new on the Clyde, the "S.A.Woolraad Woltemade". She looked so impressive and such clean lines. At slow ahead the jetty she was using for her bollard test started to move so I gather it was cancelled. Sorry I cannot find any pictures as yet to put up.

Hey Martin........many variations on the theme name TID, however the Wikki people describe what appears to be a valid name source .......... as.....

Name: Tug, Inshore and Dock

Well thanks for that Derek and Martin.

I guess the meaning of the abbreviation of TID can be many, just pick one.

Thanks Martin for all the links - made for some vary interesting reading....

So, for understanding these tugs were about 70Ft long and weighed 6 ton. Were used by the military in wartime for towing floating walkways and supplying ships in harbour.

;)...just a little heavier in the gross registered & displacement tonnage Martin DU .......... Derek

As designed they were 65 feet (20 m) long by 17 feet (5.2 m) in the beam by 8 feet (2.4 m) deep, measuring 54 GRT. Draught when laden was 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 m) - a displacement of 124 tons. Propulsion was a 220 ihp 2 cylinder reciprocating steam engine driving a single screw. Steam was from coal or later oil - the change being to allow use in the Far East. They were capable of around 8 knots.

Apologies Derek and thanks again for going to the trouble of posting correct figures,

Each section of the build roughly 3 metres weighed 6 ton to allow road transport of each section. After reading it the second time I thought the weight was a little light on for a 70 ft tug :D
