I have a question for you

King George V Class:

Can you lads tell me the MAJOR differences between each ship in class, and
If you were to build a model of one, which boat would you build and why.

I tend to favour Prince of Wales but what do I know...

The Prince of Wales and the Duke of York had aircraft between the funnels with the ships boats behind the rear funnel and the King George V, the Anson and the Howe had their ships boats between the funnels and no aircraft.

Actually I think I might be wrong with what I said and that they all did away with their aircraft at the end of the war.

They did away with the aircraft during the war, the KGV claimed to be the last battleship to fly off a plane. The hangars were used as crew accommodation and as a cinema. I also have a nagging feeling that there were some differences in the amount of deck planking the ships had, possibly less in the later ones but I can't remember where I (may!) have read it.

Major difference found so far whilst re doing the deck is that all ships less KGV had deck planking all the way up to the pointy end (bow), then plating over decking for anchor chains.

All the ships had quite a few differences .I think either Anson or Howe had a emergency conning position built around the after funell (like a closed in bridge) and POW had a different degaussing cable arrangement around her hull  It may also be the case that POW's bow flared out at a different radius (something like two feet), but don't quote me on any of the above. If it were my choice it'd be Anson

Martin, this is a quote from Janes 55/56 edition "Appearance notes. Differences are mainly confined to bridge details.
Number of small A.A. gun varies oneach ship. D of Y has extended platform with S.L., enlarged auxiliary steering position
on aft funnel.  In Howe a windscreen is fitted ( on platform aft funnel) 2 single 40 mm fitted on platfrom. Anson has large
modern high-angle directors (doesnt give type) small platform with S.L. Anson and D of Y carry pompom in large sponsons
either side of bridge. KG. V. has small platform with S.L. (presumably on side of Bridge) Make of that what you will - comments
in () are mine.  Photos in Janes too small the make out much detail.

Thanks for info. Ive decided to build PoW as we have a Bismark and Hood in our club with a few other Battleships and Cruisers under construction at 1:72 scale.
The only major differences Ive spotted so far is the shape of bow and decking goes all the way up to the bow. Another forum member as provided a link to a video  - with some detail re planking, ie, I have noticed another wide plank inside the margin plank  and its this plank the the main deck planks have been joggled into - hope that makes sense %).

Also noticed on a number of photos, details of platforms around funnels vary but exact detail hard to distinguish on small photos.

Will keep looking for further info

Prince of Wales has a different hull shape there was aknuckle in the forecastle along the deck edge.

  As built King George V had a very prominent external degaussing cable around her hull.

With info supplied so far, I have now modified bow to bring up to date for Prince of Wales...

Before and After photos. The bow has been filled and sanded just waiting for paint
