Bourbon Dolphin revisited
« on: April 20, 2009, 05:15:47 am »

For years, I have struggled to grasp how things went causing the tragic loss of the Dolphin. The written words, were not giving me the full mental picture of that day. I came across this computer re-creation tonight, that shows those events more clearly.
May God bless those that go down to the sea in ships.

Unfortunately it is more common to cut costs especially with familiarisation.

It was on the telly on Sunday on Trawlers, Rescues and Rigs.

A great programme.

What compensation do you thing the crewmens families got for the loss of loved ones?

You know as well as i do ...no account of the ordeal other than accidental coverage by the insurance broker ..unless.. now that some blame as been laid , the families of the lost and living file a class action law suit ...

I have seen similar situation's, often, its harder on the families to pursue legalities than it is to lick the wounds and carry on ....I mean its bad enough and traumatising...

I have also seen the other side ,where some vindication is gained, that a company was taken to task for negligence\diligence in the name of a loved one  ..and on paper ,in documentation ..blame laid and restitution made ...
It really all depends on that individuals family what they see as sufficent ..some maybe satisfied with the fine's other's may want more servere punishment..

I realize most maritime unions have a compensation plan to provide for the loss of income for the families, but it rarely is a realistic pension.
Too many things don't add up though. What occured for the vessel to drift so far off course? What prompted the change in the deployment of the deck gear at such an inopportune time? Did the sudden listing of the vessel cause the mains to shut down due to a fluid level indication of the engine oil showing as too low? The Captain was ultimately responsible for his ship. Why didn't he delay the crew change until he fully understood his task?
