The true cost of fish.....
« on: April 27, 2009, 08:25:01 PM »

I have the sad news that one of the "stars" of the first series of the Trawlermen ( on BBC ) has been lost at sea. Kevin West (43) , skipper of the Ryanwood FR307 , was lost overboard from the boat yesterday ( Sunday the 26th of April ) 35 nautical miles NE from Fraserburgh. He was up on watch steaming the boat off and one of the crew went up into the wheelhouse about one hour after anyone spoke to Kevin to find he was not there. They turned both boats around and started a concerted search , in total 26 boats took part yesterday , but they called off the search at 2115hrs once it was dark. The Fraserburgh lifeboat and the Sunrise/Ryanwood went back out today but returned to harbour in the last hour.

I've known Kevin for over 15 years and he was one of the good guys , one of the top Skippers in the fleet , and he will be missed by everyone that had the privilege of knowing him.

Rest in peace Kevin , you were taken far far too young.

Having watched the programs I certainly do not begrudge the price I have to pay for fish. its there job they chose to do for some
its in the blood.  But without doubt they are all Brave Men / Women.

My thoughts go out to Kevins Family. and Friends

I think some of us are missing the point here........

It is not the true cost of fish that is all out it is the value the "Great Unwashed" place on the lives and quality of life of those they do not encounter everyday.

There are many who, like our hard working, brave fisher lads, suffer incredible risk and terrible working conditions to earn a living, and go unrecognised just because they seldom make the headlines. On the other hand TV so called "celebrities", football players etc who command our attention each day receive adulation and obscene salaries!

The loss of just one fisherman is so, so distressing. I could do without ever seeing the likes of some of the others I have mentioned. My God, they have even made a TV film about a footballers mother, now!

SUCH A SAD LOSS FOR THE TRUE COST OF FISHING,     THIS IS A LAMENT TO ALL DEEPSEA FISHERMEN WHO LOST THERE LIVES .

THE PRICE OF FISH IS VERY DEAR

TO MANY MEN WERE LOST LAST YEAR

TO MANY MEN IN A WATERY GRAVE

THAT WAS THE PRICE, THE PRICE THEY PAID

UP IN THE LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN

WHERE THE ENDLESS FIGHT IS NEVER DONE

THE HIGH WINDS SCREAM THE FISHERMEN FIGHT

WHERE THE BOILING SEA MEETS THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

TIRED AND WEARY DRENCHED AND COLD

HE STRIVES TO FILL THE ICED UP HOLD

MANY A MANS GONE OVER THE RAIL

LOST IN THE TEETH OF AN ARCTIC GALE

I ONLY HOPE MY POINT IS CLEAR

THE PRICE OF FISH IS VERY DEAR.

REST IN PEACE KEVIN,       DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO ALL YOUR LOVED ONES AT THIS SAD TIME.

Kevin's memorial service was held today at the Old Parish Church in Fraserburgh. At least 300 turned up and it was a very moving service. The tales told of Kevin's exploits both at sea and in his youth with cars made a lot of us smile remembering just what a character he was.

RIP Kevin

Another man has been lost unfortunately

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/north_east/8356014.stm

Quote from: BBC
A search for a fishermen lost overboard in the North Sea has been called off by the coastguard.

The 28-year-old deckhand on the Osprey 3 was seen to fall into the water five miles north of Macduff in Aberdeenshire at about 1900 GMT on Wednesday.

Aberdeen Coastguard said it had no plans to resume the search but local fishing boats, including the Osprey 3, were still thought to be looking.

It is believed the missing man was not wearing a life jacket.

The search initially involved two lifeboats, an RAF helicopter and several fishing boats.

The coastguard said weather conditions were quite calm at the time the man fell off the Banff-registered boat.

The boats are still looking for his remains , they're trying to at least give his family closure
